ABSTRACT
This study examines the various sources of financing available to manufacturing companies in Cameroon, with a specific focus on Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun. Financing is a critical aspect for the growth and sustainability of manufacturing firms, enabling them to invest in technology, expand operations, and improve competitiveness. The research employs a case study approach, utilizing both quantitative data analysis and qualitative interviews with key financial managers from both companies. By exploring the range of financing options—internal financing, bank loans, equity financing, and government support—the study aims to provide comprehensive insights into how these companies navigate their financial strategies to support their manufacturing processes and growth objectives.

Background to the Study
Manufacturing is a key sector in Cameroon’s economy, contributing significantly to employment, GDP, and exports. As the sector continues to grow, the need for adequate and sustainable financing becomes increasingly important. Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun are two of the largest manufacturing companies in the country, playing a pivotal role in the production of beverages. Understanding how these companies secure and utilize financing can provide valuable insights into the broader financing landscape for manufacturing firms in Cameroon.
The financing of manufacturing companies in Cameroon involves a mix of internal and external sources. Internal financing, which includes retained earnings and internal capital reserves, is often the first line of funding for many firms. This type of financing is crucial as it reflects the company’s profitability and ability to reinvest its earnings into operations. Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun, with their established market positions, leverage their internal funds to support day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives (Smith, 2019).
External financing sources are equally important and come in various forms, such as bank loans, equity financing, and government support. Bank loans are a common financing source, providing the necessary capital for expansion and modernization projects. In Cameroon, the banking sector is relatively developed, offering a range of financial products to manufacturing companies. However, accessing these loans often involves stringent requirements and collateral, which can pose challenges for some companies (Ndedi, 2020).
Equity financing, including the issuance of shares and attracting private investors, offers another vital avenue for raising capital. This method allows companies to acquire significant funds without the immediate repayment obligations associated with loans. Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun have leveraged equity financing to some extent, attracting both local and international investors to support their growth (Ebot, 2018).
Government support and incentives also play a crucial role in financing manufacturing companies in Cameroon. The government has implemented various programs and policies aimed at promoting industrial growth, including tax incentives, subsidies, and grants. These measures are designed to reduce the financial burden on manufacturing firms and encourage investment in the sector (Ministry of Finance, 2019).
Despite the availability of these financing sources, manufacturing companies in Cameroon face several challenges. High-interest rates, bureaucratic hurdles, and limited access to capital markets can hinder their ability to secure adequate financing. Additionally, economic volatility and regulatory uncertainties can impact financial planning and investment decisions. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of the financing landscape and the development of strategies to optimize financial resources (Fonjong, 2019).
In summary, the background to this study situates the research within the broader context of financing manufacturing companies in Cameroon, focusing on Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun. By exploring the various sources of financing and the challenges associated with them, the study aims to provide a detailed understanding of how these companies navigate their financial strategies to support their manufacturing operations and growth. This research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on corporate finance in emerging markets and offer practical recommendations for improving access to financing for manufacturing firms in Cameroon.
Statement of the Problem
Financing is a critical component for the success and growth of manufacturing companies. In Cameroon, manufacturing firms like Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun require substantial financial resources to maintain their operations, invest in new technologies, expand production capacities, and enhance competitiveness. However, these companies face significant challenges in securing adequate financing, which can hinder their growth and sustainability.
One primary issue is the limited availability and accessibility of diverse financing sources. While internal financing remains a crucial option, it often falls short of meeting the large-scale capital needs of manufacturing firms. As a result, companies must rely on external financing sources such as bank loans, equity financing, and government support. However, each of these sources comes with its own set of challenges and constraints, impacting the financial strategies of these companies.
Bank loans are a common source of external financing, but the high-interest rates and stringent collateral requirements imposed by Cameroonian banks can be prohibitive for many manufacturing firms. Additionally, the process of securing loans can be bureaucratic and time-consuming, posing significant barriers to timely access to capital. This situation is exacerbated by the economic volatility and regulatory uncertainties in Cameroon, which can impact the risk assessments and lending practices of banks.
Equity financing offers an alternative means of raising capital, allowing companies to attract investors without the immediate repayment obligations of loans. However, the equity market in Cameroon is not fully developed, and there is a limited pool of potential investors. This restricts the ability of manufacturing firms to tap into equity financing, leaving them with fewer options for securing the necessary funds for their operations and growth.
Government support, in the form of tax incentives, subsidies, and grants, is intended to promote industrial growth and reduce the financial burden on manufacturing firms. While these measures are beneficial, their effectiveness is often hampered by bureaucratic inefficiencies and a lack of transparency in the allocation of resources. As a result, many manufacturing companies struggle to access the full benefits of government support, limiting their financial capabilities.
The challenges associated with securing adequate financing can have significant implications for the financial performance and sustainability of manufacturing companies in Cameroon. Without sufficient financial resources, firms may struggle to invest in new technologies, expand their production capacities, and compete effectively in the market. This can lead to stagnation or decline in their operations, impacting their contributions to the local economy and employment.
In conclusion, the problem lies in the limited availability and accessibility of diverse financing sources for manufacturing companies in Cameroon, coupled with the challenges associated with bank loans, equity financing, and government support. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive understanding of the financing landscape and the development of strategies to optimize financial resources. This study aims to explore the various sources of financing for Brasseries du Cameroun and Guinness Cameroun, identify the challenges they face, and provide practical recommendations for improving access to financing for manufacturing firms in Cameroon.
