Background to the Study
Cash management is a critical aspect of financial management for businesses across industries and geographies. It involves managing cash flows, monitoring liquidity, and optimizing cash resources to support operational needs and strategic initiatives. Effective cash management allows businesses to meet their financial obligations, seize investment opportunities, and navigate economic challenges effectively (Brigham & Houston, 2019).
In Bertoua, a city known for its diverse economic activities, enterprises face unique cash management challenges influenced by factors such as market dynamics, regulatory environments, and access to financial services. Limited access to credit, high transaction costs, and currency fluctuations are some of the challenges that businesses in Bertoua encounter concerning cash management (IMF, 2021). Understanding these challenges and identifying effective cash management practices is crucial for the sustainable growth of enterprises in the region.
Cash management practices directly impact the financial performance and profitability of enterprises. Businesses with efficient cash management systems can reduce financing costs, minimize liquidity risks, and improve profitability (Gitman, 2009). Conversely, poor cash management can lead to cash flow problems, increased borrowing costs, and missed growth opportunities (Brigham & Houston, 2019).
The economic environment in Cameroon, including factors like inflation rates, exchange rate fluctuations, and regulatory changes, further underscores the importance of effective cash management for businesses in Bertoua (World Bank, 2020). Businesses must navigate these economic challenges while maintaining optimal cash flow and liquidity positions.
Financial institutions also play a crucial role in supporting cash management practices. Banks, microfinance institutions, and other financial service providers offer services such as cash flow management, credit facilities, and financial advisory services that can enhance cash management capabilities among businesses (GIZ, 2013). Understanding the relationship between businesses in Bertoua and financial institutions regarding cash management is vital for improving financial service delivery and addressing the needs of enterprises.
Despite the significance of cash management, there is limited empirical research focusing on its impact on enterprises in Bertoua, Cameroon. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how effective cash management practices contribute to the performance and profitability of enterprises in Bertoua.
Statement of the Problem
The performance and profitability of enterprises in Bertoua are significantly influenced by their cash management practices. However, many businesses face challenges related to cash flow management, liquidity optimization, and financial risk mitigation. Limited access to credit, high transaction costs, and economic uncertainties further compound these challenges.
Businesses in Bertoua often struggle with cash flow forecasting, receivables and payables management, and optimizing cash reserves. These challenges can lead to liquidity problems, increased borrowing costs, and missed growth opportunities. Additionally, economic factors such as inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and regulatory changes impact cash management decisions and strategies.
The relationship between businesses in Bertoua and financial institutions also influences cash management practices. Limited access to financial services or inadequate support from financial institutions can hinder effective cash management.
Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing cash management and identifying strategies to improve cash flow, liquidity management, and financial performance among enterprises in Bertoua.
