Abstract

Christian Religious Education (CRE) plays a vital role in shaping the moral and ethical development of students in secondary schools. In Buea Municipality, Cameroon, CRE is integrated into the educational curriculum with the aim of influencing students’ behavior and personal development. This study investigates the impact of the Christian Religious Education subject on student behavior in secondary schools within the municipality. It explores how CRE contributes to students’ moral values, social conduct, and overall character development.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data from students, teachers, and school administrators. Quantitative data is collected through structured questionnaires administered to students to assess their perceptions of how CRE influences their behavior. Key areas explored include students’ understanding of moral principles, changes in social conduct, and the application of religious teachings in their daily lives.

Qualitative data is obtained through interviews with CRE teachers and school administrators, who provide insights into the curriculum’s implementation, the teaching methods employed, and the observed effects on student behavior. Classroom observations further complement the data by providing direct evidence of how CRE lessons are delivered and the interaction between teachers and students.

The study finds that CRE has a significant impact on student behavior in secondary schools in Buea Municipality. Students who actively engage in CRE classes demonstrate a greater understanding of moral values such as honesty, respect, and empathy. These values translate into positive behavior changes, including improved relationships with peers, adherence to school rules, and a reduction in disciplinary issues. The teachings of CRE contribute to the development of a strong ethical foundation, which influences students’ decision-making and interpersonal interactions.

Teachers report that CRE provides a framework for discussing ethical and moral dilemmas, helping students navigate complex social situations with integrity and responsibility. The subject encourages self-reflection and personal growth, promoting a supportive and respectful school environment. However, the study also identifies challenges such as varying levels of engagement among students, differences in religious backgrounds, and the need for more dynamic teaching approaches to fully realize the benefits of CRE.

In conclusion, Christian Religious Education plays a crucial role in shaping student behavior in secondary schools in Buea Municipality. By instilling moral values and providing a structured approach to ethical discussions, CRE contributes to the development of well-rounded individuals. The study recommends that schools continue to support and enhance CRE programs, ensuring that they are effectively integrated into the curriculum and delivered in a way that engages students and fosters positive behavioral outcomes.
