Abstract

Understanding the relationship between learning styles and academic performance is crucial for optimizing educational outcomes. This study assesses how different learning styles impact the academic performance of students in secondary schools within Buea Municipality, Cameroon. By exploring various learning styles—such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/writing preferences—and their correlation with students’ academic achievements, the research aims to provide insights into how tailored educational strategies can enhance student learning and performance.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative component involves administering a learning styles inventory to secondary school students to identify their predominant learning styles. Academic performance data, including grades and standardized test scores, is then analyzed in relation to these learning styles to determine any significant correlations.

Qualitative data is collected through interviews and focus group discussions with students, teachers, and academic counselors. These discussions aim to gather in-depth insights into how students’ learning styles influence their study habits, classroom experiences, and overall academic performance. Teachers’ perspectives on the effectiveness of different instructional methods and their impact on students’ learning outcomes are also explored.

The findings reveal that students’ learning styles have a notable impact on their academic performance. Students who employ learning strategies aligned with their preferred learning style—whether visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or reading/writing—tend to perform better academically. For instance, visual learners who use diagrams, charts, and other visual aids achieve higher grades compared to those who do not utilize such resources. Similarly, auditory learners who engage in discussions and verbal explanations show improved performance, while kinesthetic learners who incorporate hands-on activities and practical experiences also exhibit better academic results.

Teachers report that recognizing and adapting to students’ learning styles enhances engagement and comprehension, leading to improved academic outcomes. However, the study also identifies challenges, such as the lack of resources to cater to diverse learning styles and the difficulty of implementing personalized teaching strategies in large classrooms. The findings suggest that a more tailored approach to teaching, which considers students’ learning preferences, can significantly enhance their academic performance.

In conclusion, the relationship between learning styles and academic performance is significant among students in Buea Municipality. To improve educational outcomes, it is recommended that educators and school administrators adopt strategies that accommodate various learning styles and provide resources that support diverse learning needs. By aligning teaching methods with students’ learning preferences, schools can foster a more effective and engaging learning environment, ultimately leading to better academic achievements.
