Abstract

This study explores the influence of teacher availability on student academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea, Cameroon. Teacher availability refers to the extent to which qualified teachers are present and accessible to students for instruction, guidance, and academic support. As the education sector in Cameroon faces challenges such as teacher shortages, inadequate resources, and high student-teacher ratios, understanding how these factors impact student performance is essential for improving academic outcomes.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative data to assess the relationship between teacher availability and student achievement. Quantitative data is collected through the analysis of academic records, including exam scores, grades, and school attendance across various secondary schools in Buea. The study also examines teacher-to-student ratios, teacher attendance, and the availability of subject-specific instructors. Qualitative data is gathered through interviews with students, teachers, and school administrators to gain insights into how teacher presence and accessibility affect the learning process.

Preliminary findings indicate that limited teacher availability has a negative impact on student academic achievement. Schools with fewer available teachers, particularly in specialized subjects such as mathematics and sciences, show lower student performance and increased dropout rates. Students in these schools often face challenges in grasping key concepts due to inadequate instructional time, limited feedback, and reduced opportunities for academic guidance. Teachers, on the other hand, are often overburdened with large class sizes and administrative duties, which limits their ability to provide individualized attention and effective instruction.

The study further identifies strategies employed by schools to address teacher shortages, including the use of temporary staff, peer-assisted learning programs, and extended study sessions. However, these measures are often insufficient to compensate for the lack of qualified and consistently available teachers.

The research concludes that improving teacher availability is critical for enhancing student academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea. Recommendations include increasing the recruitment of qualified teachers, providing professional development opportunities to retain existing staff, and improving working conditions to ensure consistent teacher presence in classrooms. Addressing these challenges is vital for creating a supportive educational environment that fosters academic success for students.
