Abstract

Indiscipline in secondary schools presents a significant challenge to achieving high academic standards and fostering a conducive learning environment. This study explores the perceptions of teachers and students regarding the impact of indiscipline on students’ academic performance in secondary schools within Buea, Cameroon. Indiscipline encompasses a range of behaviors, including truancy, disruptive classroom behavior, and general defiance of school rules, which can undermine the educational process and negatively affect academic outcomes.

The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive insights from both teachers and students. The quantitative component involves structured questionnaires administered to a representative sample of secondary school students and teachers in Buea. The qualitative component includes in-depth interviews with selected participants to capture nuanced perspectives on the issue.

Findings reveal that both teachers and students perceive indiscipline as a major obstacle to academic success. Teachers report that indiscipline disrupts classroom management, impedes effective teaching, and creates an environment where focused learning is challenging. The inability to maintain order affects their capacity to deliver lessons effectively and provides less time for addressing individual students’ needs. Teachers also note that indiscipline contributes to a general atmosphere of disengagement and low morale, which can further diminish academic performance.

Students, on the other hand, indicate that indiscipline among peers can create distractions and reduce their own opportunities to concentrate on their studies. They highlight how disruptive behavior from classmates not only affects their learning experience but also impacts their motivation and academic achievement. Additionally, students acknowledge that their own participation in indiscipline often stems from external factors such as family issues, peer pressure, and lack of proper guidance, which complicates their academic engagement and performance.

The study underscores the importance of addressing indiscipline through a combination of proactive strategies and responsive interventions. Recommendations include the implementation of comprehensive school policies that promote positive behavior and reinforce the importance of discipline. Schools should also invest in training programs for teachers to develop effective classroom management techniques and foster a supportive environment for both students and educators. Engaging students in the creation of behavior guidelines and involving them in decision-making processes related to school discipline can also enhance their sense of responsibility and adherence to rules.

Furthermore, the study suggests that schools should provide additional support services, such as counseling and mentorship programs, to address the root causes of indiscipline and support students in overcoming personal challenges. By creating a more structured and supportive learning environment, schools in Buea can improve academic performance and foster a more positive educational experience for all students.

This research contributes valuable insights into the complex relationship between indiscipline and academic performance, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and collaborative efforts to enhance the overall educational environment in secondary schools.
