Abstract

This study examines the impact of digitalization on student academic performance in higher education institutions in Buea, Cameroon. Digitalization, which encompasses the integration of digital technologies into learning processes, has become a key driver of change in educational environments globally. With the increasing adoption of digital tools such as online learning platforms, e-libraries, and digital assessments, higher education institutions in Buea are experiencing shifts in teaching and learning methodologies. This research explores how these digitalization efforts influence academic outcomes, student engagement, and overall educational quality.

The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data to assess the relationship between digitalization and academic performance. The quantitative component involves a survey administered to students across various higher education institutions in Buea. The survey gathers data on students’ access to digital resources, their frequency of use, and their perceptions of how digital tools have influenced their learning experiences. Key metrics include self-reported academic performance, the perceived ease of access to information, and the effectiveness of digital tools in enhancing learning outcomes.

In the qualitative phase, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews are conducted with students and faculty members to gain deeper insights into the experiences and challenges associated with digitalization. The qualitative data helps to contextualize the findings from the survey by exploring issues such as digital literacy, the availability of technological infrastructure, and the readiness of students and faculty to embrace digital tools. These discussions also address potential barriers to effective digital learning, such as limited internet access, lack of digital devices, and insufficient training in the use of digital platforms.

The findings suggest that digitalization has a significant impact on student academic performance in higher education in Buea. Students who frequently use digital tools report improved access to educational resources, greater flexibility in their studies, and enhanced engagement in the learning process. Digital platforms, such as online courses and e-books, allow students to access information at their convenience, which contributes to better time management and more effective learning strategies. Additionally, digital assessments provide immediate feedback, enabling students to identify and address learning gaps more quickly.

However, the study also identifies challenges that limit the full potential of digitalization in improving academic performance. A major barrier is the digital divide, where students from lower socio-economic backgrounds struggle with limited access to digital devices and stable internet connections. This inequality in access creates disparities in academic performance, with students who have better access to digital tools generally performing better than those with limited access. Furthermore, both students and faculty express concerns about the adequacy of training and support in using digital platforms, which can hinder the effective integration of technology into the curriculum.

In conclusion, while digitalization offers significant opportunities for enhancing academic performance in higher education in Buea, its impact is moderated by factors such as access to technology, digital literacy, and the level of institutional support. To fully leverage the benefits of digitalization, there is a need for higher education institutions to address these challenges by investing in digital infrastructure, providing training for both students and faculty, and ensuring that digital resources are accessible to all students. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the role of digitalization in education and provides insights for policymakers and educational institutions aiming to improve academic outcomes through technology.
