Abstract

This study examines the impact of pre-school education on the academic achievements of primary school students in Buea, Cameroon. Pre-school education, also known as early childhood education, provides foundational learning experiences before formal schooling. In Cameroon, pre-school enrollment varies based on socio-economic factors, parental awareness, and availability of early childhood centers. This research aims to assess how pre-school education influences the academic performance of primary school students, focusing on key areas such as literacy, numeracy, cognitive development, and overall academic outcomes.

A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from academic performance records with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions. The study collected data from primary school records, analyzing the performance of students who attended pre-school versus those who did not. Interviews were conducted with teachers, parents, and school administrators to gain a deeper understanding of the perceived benefits of pre-school education on students’ academic success.

The findings indicate that pre-school education has a significant positive impact on the academic achievements of primary school students. Students who attended pre-school consistently outperformed their peers who did not, particularly in early literacy and numeracy skills. Pre-school education was found to enhance cognitive development, improve socialization skills, and foster a positive attitude towards learning, all of which contributed to better academic performance in primary school.

One of the key findings was that students with pre-school education demonstrated higher levels of preparedness when entering primary school. They were more familiar with the school environment, exhibited better attention spans, and were more adept at following instructions. These early advantages translated into better academic results, especially in the early grades. In contrast, students without pre-school education often struggled with basic concepts, leading to lower academic performance and higher rates of grade repetition.

The study also revealed that the quality of pre-school education plays a crucial role in determining its impact on academic achievement. High-quality pre-school programs, characterized by trained teachers, structured curricula, and a focus on early literacy and numeracy, produced better academic outcomes compared to informal or unstructured pre-school settings. The study found that children from higher socio-economic backgrounds were more likely to attend high-quality pre-schools, while children from lower-income families often had limited access to such programs.

Parental involvement was also identified as a critical factor influencing the effectiveness of pre-school education. Parents who actively engaged in their children’s early education and supported learning at home contributed to better academic outcomes. Conversely, children whose parents were less involved in their early education were more likely to face challenges in primary school, regardless of whether they attended pre-school.

Based on these findings, the study recommends that policymakers in Cameroon prioritize the expansion and improvement of pre-school education, particularly in underserved areas. Increasing access to quality pre-school programs can help bridge the educational gap between children from different socio-economic backgrounds and improve overall academic performance in primary schools. Additionally, initiatives to raise parental awareness about the importance of early childhood education and to support parental involvement in early learning should be promoted.

In conclusion, pre-school education has a profound impact on the academic achievements of primary school students in Buea, Cameroon. Early exposure to structured learning environments equips children with the skills and attitudes necessary for success in primary education. By investing in quality pre-school education and ensuring equal access for all children, Cameroon can enhance the academic outcomes of its future generations.
