Abstract
The quality of life for refugees is profoundly impacted by the psychosocial support they receive, which can influence their overall well-being and integration into host communities. This study explores the relationship between psychosocial support and the quality of life among Central African Republic (CAR) refugees residing in the UNHCR camp at Gado Badzere, located in the East Region of Cameroon. It examines how various forms of psychosocial assistance, including mental health services, social support, and community engagement, affect the refugees’ daily lives and overall quality of life.
Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative surveys of refugees with qualitative interviews of key informants, including camp administrators, humanitarian workers, and mental health professionals. The study aims to identify the types of psychosocial support provided in the camp, assess their effectiveness, and understand their impact on the refugees’ quality of life.
The findings indicate that psychosocial support plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for refugees. Services such as counseling, trauma therapy, and community activities contribute to better mental health, enhanced social integration, and a greater sense of security among refugees. Refugees who receive adequate psychosocial support report higher levels of satisfaction with their living conditions, improved interpersonal relationships, and a more positive outlook on their future.
However, the study also highlights several challenges affecting the effectiveness of psychosocial support in the camp. These challenges include limited resources, insufficient mental health professionals, and cultural barriers that impact the accessibility and acceptance of support services. Additionally, the lack of integration between different support services can lead to gaps in care and reduced overall effectiveness.
The research concludes that while psychosocial support is essential for enhancing the quality of life of refugees, addressing existing challenges is crucial for maximizing its benefits. Recommendations include increasing funding for mental health and psychosocial services, improving coordination among support providers, and implementing culturally sensitive approaches to ensure that refugees can fully access and benefit from the available services.
In summary, the study underscores the importance of comprehensive psychosocial support in fostering resilience and improving the quality of life for refugees. By addressing the identified challenges and enhancing support mechanisms, the UNHCR camp at Gado Badzere can better meet the needs of its refugee population, contributing to their well-being and integration.
