Abstract

The effective implementation of the Social Studies curriculum in primary schools plays a crucial role in shaping students’ understanding of society, citizenship, and cultural heritage. This study investigates the implementation of the Social Studies curriculum and its impact on teachers’ effectiveness in selected public primary schools in Bamenda, Cameroon. The research aims to evaluate how well the curriculum is being executed, the challenges faced by teachers, and the overall influence on their teaching effectiveness.

The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with Social Studies teachers, school administrators, and curriculum specialists. The research examines the extent to which the prescribed curriculum is followed, the resources available to teachers, and the methods used to deliver the content. Additionally, it explores the relationship between curriculum implementation and various indicators of teacher effectiveness, such as student engagement, lesson planning, instructional strategies, and assessment practices.

Findings reveal that the implementation of the Social Studies curriculum in Bamenda’s public primary schools is uneven, with significant disparities in how teachers interpret and deliver the curriculum. Many teachers face challenges due to inadequate training, insufficient teaching materials, and large class sizes, which impede their ability to effectively implement the curriculum. These challenges often result in a superficial coverage of topics, limiting students’ depth of understanding and engagement with the subject matter.

The study also highlights that teachers who receive regular training and support are more effective in delivering the Social Studies curriculum. They tend to employ a wider range of instructional strategies, engage students more actively in the learning process, and are better able to assess and respond to students’ needs. Conversely, teachers with limited professional development opportunities struggle with curriculum implementation, leading to lower effectiveness in teaching Social Studies.

Based on these findings, the study recommends that educational authorities in Bamenda prioritize ongoing professional development for Social Studies teachers, ensure the provision of adequate teaching resources, and support smaller class sizes to enhance curriculum implementation. Furthermore, the study suggests that curriculum developers should consider teachers’ feedback and the realities of classroom settings to make the Social Studies curriculum more practical and applicable.

In conclusion, the successful implementation of the Social Studies curriculum is critical for fostering effective teaching in public primary schools in Bamenda. By addressing the challenges identified, educational stakeholders can improve teachers’ effectiveness and, consequently, students’ learning outcomes in Social Studies.
