Abstract

This study examines the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications on communication efficiency within organizations in Buea, Cameroon. In today’s digital age, ICT applications, including email systems, instant messaging, video conferencing, and collaborative platforms, have become integral to organizational communication. This research aims to determine how these technologies influence communication efficiency, focusing on factors such as speed, accuracy, and overall effectiveness of information exchange. By using a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, this study assesses the impact of ICT applications on communication practices and provides insights into how organizations can leverage these tools to enhance their communication processes.

Introduction

Effective communication is essential for organizational success. With the advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), organizations have access to a variety of tools designed to improve communication efficiency. This study explores how ICT applications impact communication practices within organizations in Buea, Cameroon. Understanding this impact can help organizations optimize their communication strategies and improve overall operational efficiency.

Research Methodology

A mixed-method approach was utilized for this research. Quantitative data were collected through structured surveys administered to employees across different organizations in Buea. The surveys focused on the types of ICT applications used, their functionality, and their perceived impact on communication efficiency. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews with organizational leaders and employees to gain deeper insights into how ICT applications affect communication practices and address specific challenges encountered.

Findings and Discussion

1. Types of ICT Applications: The study identified several ICT applications commonly used for communication within organizations, including email systems, instant messaging platforms, video conferencing tools, and collaborative software. Each application was evaluated for its contribution to communication efficiency.

2. Impact on Communication Speed: ICT applications have significantly improved the speed of communication within organizations. Tools such as instant messaging and video conferencing enable real-time communication, reducing delays and facilitating quicker decision-making processes.

3. Accuracy and Clarity: ICT applications also enhance the accuracy and clarity of communication. Email systems and collaborative platforms provide a written record of exchanges, which helps in minimizing misunderstandings and ensuring that information is conveyed clearly and accurately.

4. Efficiency and Productivity: The use of ICT applications has led to increased efficiency and productivity in communication practices. Collaborative software and project management tools streamline information sharing and coordination among team members, leading to more effective and organized communication.

5. Challenges: Despite the benefits, several challenges were reported. Issues such as technical difficulties, lack of proper training, and over-reliance on technology can hinder communication efficiency. Some employees also experienced difficulties in adapting to new ICT tools, which affected their overall communication effectiveness.

6. Recommendations: To maximize the benefits of ICT applications, organizations should invest in reliable and user-friendly technologies. Providing comprehensive training for employees on how to use these tools effectively is crucial. Additionally, organizations should implement strategies to address technical issues promptly and ensure that communication practices are adapted to leverage the full potential of ICT applications.

Conclusion

The study concludes that ICT applications have a significant positive impact on communication efficiency within organizations in Buea, Cameroon. These technologies enhance communication speed, accuracy, and overall effectiveness. Addressing the challenges related to technology use and providing adequate training can further improve communication practices. Organizations should continue to embrace and optimize ICT applications to achieve greater efficiency and productivity in their communication processes.
