Abstract
This study assesses youth engagement in agribusiness and its impact on income generation, focusing on mushroom (Pleurotus sp.) cultivation and marketing in Buea, Cameroon. With increasing unemployment and limited job opportunities for youths, agribusiness presents a viable alternative for economic empowerment. Mushroom cultivation, in particular, offers high market potential due to its nutritional value and relatively low investment costs. This research aims to explore the extent of youth involvement in mushroom farming, the challenges they face, and the income effects associated with this agribusiness activity.
The study utilized a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative data from structured questionnaires with qualitative insights from interviews. A sample of 50 youths engaged in mushroom cultivation was selected, and data were collected on factors such as start-up capital, production processes, marketing strategies, and income levels. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were employed to determine the relationship between youth engagement in mushroom farming and their income.
Findings reveal that youth engagement in mushroom cultivation is moderate, with most participants driven by the potential for quick income generation and the growing demand for mushrooms in local markets. However, challenges such as limited access to capital, inadequate technical knowledge, and market access constraints hinder optimal participation and income maximization. Despite these challenges, the study indicates that youth involved in mushroom farming experience a significant increase in income compared to non-participants, highlighting the agribusiness’s positive impact on livelihoods.
The study concludes that mushroom cultivation presents a promising agribusiness opportunity for youth in Buea, contributing to both employment and income generation. To enhance youth engagement and maximize income benefits, the study recommends targeted interventions, including training on modern cultivation techniques, improved access to credit facilities, and the development of better marketing channels. These strategies can help unlock the full potential of mushroom farming as a sustainable income-generating activity for young people in the region.
