Abstract

This study investigates the management of occupational health and safety (OHS) in selected organizations within the South West Region of Cameroon. Effective OHS management is crucial for protecting workers from health hazards and ensuring a safe working environment. In Cameroon, inadequate OHS practices can lead to increased workplace accidents, health issues, and legal liabilities. This research aims to assess current OHS management practices, identify challenges, and propose improvements for better worker protection and organizational compliance.

Data was collected through surveys and interviews with employees and management from various organizations, including manufacturing, service, and construction sectors in the South West Region. The study evaluates OHS policies, safety procedures, training programs, and the implementation of safety measures in these organizations. It also examines the awareness levels of workers regarding safety protocols and the effectiveness of OHS management systems.

Findings indicate that while some organizations have established OHS policies and procedures, implementation is inconsistent across different sectors. Many organizations lack comprehensive safety training programs, and adherence to safety practices is often poor. Inadequate safety equipment, insufficient risk assessments, and weak enforcement of safety standards contribute to higher rates of workplace accidents and health issues. Additionally, there is a general lack of awareness among employees about their rights and responsibilities regarding occupational health and safety.

The study identifies several opportunities for improving OHS management in the South West Region. Recommendations include the development and enforcement of stricter OHS regulations, regular safety audits, and enhanced training programs for employees and management. Establishing clear safety guidelines and improving communication between workers and management can also help in addressing safety concerns. Furthermore, organizations should invest in appropriate safety equipment and conduct regular risk assessments to mitigate workplace hazards.

In conclusion, the research underscores the need for a robust approach to managing occupational health and safety in the South West Region of Cameroon. Effective OHS management practices are essential for safeguarding workers’ health and ensuring organizational compliance with safety standards.
