ABSTRACT
This study explores the effect of music on the acquisition of mathematical skills in early childhood education within the Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Music education is often integrated into early learning environments, and this research aims to evaluate its impact on children’s mathematical abilities.
The research employs a quasi-experimental design with pre-tests and post-tests to measure the mathematical skills of children exposed to music-based instruction compared to those who receive traditional instruction. The sample consists of two groups of preschool children from selected schools in Buea: one group engaged in music-integrated mathematical activities, and the other involved in conventional teaching methods.
Quantitative data were collected through standardized mathematical assessments to evaluate children’s skills in areas such as numeracy, pattern recognition, and basic arithmetic operations. Qualitative data were gathered from teacher observations and parent interviews to understand the broader impact of music on children’s learning experiences.
The results reveal that children who participated in music-integrated activities showed significant improvements in their mathematical skills compared to those who received only traditional instruction. Statistical analyses indicate that the music group demonstrated enhanced abilities in numeracy skills, pattern recognition, and problem-solving tasks. Furthermore, teacher observations noted increased engagement and enthusiasm in the music group, which contributed to better learning outcomes.
Qualitative feedback from parents and educators highlights that music integration helped make mathematical concepts more relatable and enjoyable for children. Music-based activities, such as singing songs with numerical themes and engaging in rhythm-based counting games, were particularly effective in reinforcing mathematical learning.
The study concludes that integrating music into early childhood education positively affects mathematical skill acquisition. Educational programs should consider incorporating music as a complementary tool to enhance learning outcomes. Teacher training on the use of music in mathematics instruction and the development of curriculum guidelines that include music-based learning strategies are recommended.
