ABSTRACT
The motor insurance business is a significant component of the insurance sector, contributing to the financial performance of insurance companies. This study assesses the impact of motor insurance on the financial performance of NSIA Insurance in Buea, Cameroon. The research examines various factors influencing the profitability of the motor insurance segment, including premium collection, claims management, and operational expenses. It also evaluates the role of regulatory frameworks and market competition in shaping the business environment for motor insurance in Buea.
The study uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods, combining interviews with key personnel at NSIA Insurance and analysis of financial reports over a five-year period. Data collection was carried out through structured interviews with managers and accountants in the motor insurance department. The study also relied on secondary data sources, including NSIA’s annual financial statements and reports from Cameroon’s insurance regulatory body. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were employed to analyze the data.
The findings reveal that motor insurance contributes significantly to NSIA’s overall financial performance. However, challenges such as rising claims, fraudulent activities, and intense market competition affect profitability. The study highlights that effective claims management, customer satisfaction, and adherence to regulatory standards are critical to improving the financial performance of the motor insurance segment. It also emphasizes the importance of technological innovation in streamlining operations and reducing operational costs.
The research concludes that while motor insurance remains a key driver of NSIA Insurance’s financial growth, there is a need for strategic reforms. These reforms include enhancing customer relations, adopting advanced claims management systems, and improving market penetration. Recommendations for NSIA Insurance include investing in technology to improve customer experience, implementing stricter measures to combat insurance fraud, and developing new motor insurance products that cater to the diverse needs of consumers in Buea. The study provides valuable insights into the relationship between motor insurance business and financial performance, with implications for insurance companies operating in similar markets.
