ABSTRACT

This study explores the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for teaching and learning in senior high schools in Bamenda Municipality, Cameroon. ICT tools are increasingly recognized for their potential to enhance educational outcomes by providing innovative teaching methods and improving student engagement. This research aims to assess the extent of ICT integration in the classroom, evaluate its impact on teaching and learning, and identify challenges and opportunities.

A mixed-method approach was employed, incorporating both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were administered to teachers and students to gather data on the types of ICT tools used, frequency of use, and perceived effectiveness. The survey also measured the impact of ICT on teaching methods and student learning outcomes. Qualitative interviews with school administrators and ICT coordinators provided additional insights into the implementation processes, challenges, and strategies for effective use of ICT in education. The study also reviewed relevant literature on ICT in education to provide context and support the findings.

The findings reveal that ICT is used to varying degrees in senior high schools in Bamenda Municipality. Commonly used tools include computers, projectors, and educational software. Teachers reported that ICT enhances lesson delivery, makes learning more interactive, and supports diverse learning styles. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited access to devices, and insufficient teacher training were identified. Some students expressed concerns about the inconsistent availability of ICT resources and the need for more practical ICT skills training.

The study concludes that while ICT has significant potential to improve teaching and learning in Bamenda’s senior high schools, addressing the identified challenges is crucial for maximizing its benefits. Recommendations include investing in ICT infrastructure, providing comprehensive training for teachers, and ensuring equitable access to resources for all students. By focusing on these areas, schools can better integrate ICT into education and enhance overall educational outcomes.
