ABSTRACT

This study examines the learning needs and compliance with academic tasks of learners with hearing impairment in selected inclusive primary schools in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Understanding the specific educational needs of students with hearing impairments and their ability to meet academic requirements is crucial for developing effective inclusive education strategies. Inclusive education aims to integrate students with disabilities into mainstream classrooms, providing them with equal learning opportunities and support.

A mixed-method research approach was utilized, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data were collected from teachers, parents, and students with hearing impairments across several inclusive primary schools in Buea. The study focused on identifying the primary learning needs of these students, such as specialized teaching methods, assistive technologies, and additional support services. It also assessed how well these students comply with academic tasks and the challenges they face in doing so.

The findings reveal that students with hearing impairments often require tailored educational approaches to fully engage with academic tasks. Key needs include access to hearing aids, use of visual aids, and instructional adjustments to accommodate their communication needs. Compliance with academic tasks is generally high when these needs are met, but challenges such as limited resources, insufficient training for teachers, and inadequate support services were observed. Teachers reported that while inclusive practices are in place, more comprehensive strategies and resources are needed to enhance learning outcomes for students with hearing impairments.

The study concludes that addressing the specific learning needs of students with hearing impairments is essential for improving their compliance with academic tasks in inclusive settings. Recommendations include increasing availability of assistive technologies, providing ongoing professional development for teachers, and ensuring adequate support services. Enhancing these aspects can significantly improve educational experiences and outcomes for learners with hearing impairments in Buea Municipality.
