ABSTRACT
This research explores the branding and promotion strategies employed in the tourism sector in Africa, with a focus on Cameroon. It seeks to analyze how tourism is marketed both locally and internationally and its influence on tourism growth. Cameroon, often called “Africa in miniature,” is rich in cultural and natural diversity. The study examines how the country’s tourism sector has been branded and promoted, highlighting both its strengths and weaknesses in this regard.
Tourism branding is a powerful tool for attracting tourists and creating a unique identity for a destination. In Cameroon, various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and local communities, are involved in crafting the nation’s tourism image. The research identifies key tourism attractions, such as wildlife parks, mountains, beaches, and cultural festivals, as central to Cameroon’s tourism identity. It is noted that national campaigns and international partnerships have contributed to raising the profile of Cameroonian tourism. Despite this, Cameroon still lags behind other African nations like Kenya and South Africa in terms of global recognition as a premier tourist destination.
Promotional efforts for tourism in Cameroon have included traditional media channels, digital platforms, and participation in international tourism fairs. Government tourism boards, together with private operators, use online platforms, brochures, and advertising to promote Cameroon’s attractions. Social media is also increasingly utilized to engage younger travelers. However, the study reveals that there is still a lack of consistent and well-coordinated promotion strategies. Issues such as inadequate funding, limited infrastructure, and political instability have hindered effective promotion campaigns.
The study also considers how Cameroon’s brand as a tourism destination could be improved. It suggests that more emphasis should be placed on ecotourism, adventure tourism, and cultural tourism. Furthermore, improving customer experience, promoting lesser-known regions, and fostering public-private partnerships could enhance tourism branding efforts.
In conclusion, while Cameroon has the potential to become a leading tourist destination in Africa, there are significant gaps in its branding and promotion strategies. Recommendations include developing a more cohesive national tourism brand, investing in infrastructure, and leveraging digital marketing more effectively to attract global audiences. These efforts could position Cameroon as a competitive tourism destination in Africa.
