ABSTRACT

Deforestation poses significant threats to biodiversity conservation, particularly in ecologically rich areas like the Dja Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon. This study investigates the impacts of deforestation on biodiversity within this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is home to diverse flora and fauna, including endangered species. The Dja Biosphere Reserve is characterized by its rich ecosystems, but it faces increasing pressures from logging, agricultural expansion, and human encroachment, which have profound implications for its biodiversity.

The study begins with an overview of the ecological importance of the Dja Biosphere Reserve. It discusses the unique species that inhabit the area, including primates, large mammals, and various plant species, which are integral to the ecological balance and provide numerous ecosystem services. The reserve serves as a crucial habitat for species that are endemic to the region and plays a vital role in maintaining genetic diversity.

The primary drivers of deforestation in the Dja Biosphere Reserve are explored, including commercial logging, subsistence farming, and infrastructural development. These activities lead to habitat fragmentation, loss of habitat quality, and direct impacts on wildlife populations. The study highlights how deforestation disrupts ecological processes, such as nutrient cycling and pollination, further threatening the survival of species and degrading the overall health of ecosystems.
