Abstract
This study examines the relationship between family background and the academic performance of secondary school students in Bamenda Municipality, Cameroon. Family background is a critical factor that can significantly influence students’ educational outcomes. Various aspects such as parental education, socioeconomic status, family structure, and home environment are known to impact a child’s academic performance. In light of this, the study investigates how these factors contribute to academic success or underachievement among secondary school students in the Bamenda Municipality.
A descriptive correlational research design was employed, with a sample of 200 students from five different secondary schools in the municipality. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires administered to both students and their parents, focusing on aspects such as parental education level, household income, family size, parental involvement in education, and the availability of learning resources at home. The students’ academic performance was assessed using their most recent examination results and class rankings.
The findings revealed a significant relationship between family background and students’ academic performance. Students from families with higher socioeconomic status, educated parents, and stable family structures performed better academically compared to those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Parental involvement in the form of academic support, such as helping with homework and providing a conducive learning environment at home, was positively correlated with higher academic achievement. In contrast, students from larger families and households with lower income levels faced challenges in accessing adequate educational resources, which negatively impacted their academic outcomes.
The study underscores the importance of parental education and involvement in a child’s academic journey. It recommends that schools and policymakers implement initiatives to engage parents more actively in their children’s education, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, support programs should be designed to assist students from lower socioeconomic families in accessing learning resources and opportunities to enhance their academic performance.
