Abstract
This study investigates the impact of training and development on employee performance in commercial banks in Cameroon, using the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Ltd, Limbe branch as a case study. In today’s highly competitive banking sector, employee performance plays a critical role in determining a bank’s overall success. Training and development are essential tools for enhancing skills, knowledge, and productivity, which directly contribute to improved performance and customer satisfaction.
The study employed a mixed-method approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Structured questionnaires were distributed to employees and managers at UBA, Limbe branch, and interviews were conducted to gain deeper insights into the bank’s training and development programs. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of these programs and their direct impact on employee performance and job satisfaction.
The findings of the study indicate that training and development have a significant positive impact on employee performance at UBA Limbe. Employees who had undergone regular training reported higher levels of job satisfaction, better understanding of their roles, and increased productivity. In particular, training on new banking technologies, customer service, and financial management were noted as key areas that contributed to enhanced performance. Employees felt more confident and capable of handling customer queries, executing tasks efficiently, and adhering to banking regulations.
Moreover, the study revealed that development programs aimed at leadership and management skills helped in identifying potential future leaders within the bank. Employees who were given the opportunity to enhance their leadership abilities through development programs were more motivated, and this had a positive impact on the overall performance of their teams. In addition, the study highlighted the role of mentoring and coaching as part of employee development, which further boosted employee morale and fostered a culture of continuous learning.
However, the study also identified challenges related to training and development at UBA, Limbe branch. Limited resources, time constraints, and the lack of personalized training programs were some of the issues highlighted by employees. Additionally, some employees felt that the training programs were not frequent enough or tailored to meet the specific needs of different departments, which occasionally hindered their ability to apply what they had learned.
In conclusion, the research demonstrates that training and development are crucial for improving employee performance in commercial banks. For UBA Limbe to sustain its competitive edge, it must continue to invest in regular and relevant training programs. Recommendations include increasing the frequency of training sessions, personalizing programs to match department-specific needs, and implementing ongoing evaluation of training effectiveness to ensure long-term benefits.
