ABSTRACT
This study investigates the comparative impact of due diligence audits and statutory audits on the financial performance and position of companies in Cameroon. Audits play a significant role in ensuring financial accuracy, compliance with regulations, and corporate governance. While statutory audits are mandatory and focus on ensuring compliance with legal and financial reporting standards, due diligence audits are typically voluntary and offer a comprehensive assessment of a company’s financial health, focusing on areas like mergers and acquisitions, investment risks, and potential liabilities. The objective of this research is to assess the effectiveness of both audit types in influencing the financial performance and stability of companies in Cameroon, particularly in areas such as profitability, liquidity, and solvency.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data to draw its conclusions. The study incorporates case studies from companies in various sectors, examining their financial records pre- and post-audit, as well as insights from interviews with auditors, financial managers, and corporate executives. Financial data was collected from audited financial statements, while additional qualitative data was sourced from interviews with audit firms and corporate decision-makers.
Results from the study reveal that both due diligence and statutory audits have significant but distinct effects on a company’s financial performance and position. Statutory audits, by ensuring adherence to accounting standards and regulatory compliance, help in minimizing financial misreporting and fraud, thus protecting shareholder value and maintaining the company’s creditworthiness. Companies that undergo regular statutory audits tend to present accurate financial records, which in turn enhances investor confidence and access to financial markets. However, the impact of statutory audits is often limited to the verification of compliance and does not necessarily identify strategic growth opportunities or potential risks beyond those required by law.
On the other hand, due diligence audits have a more profound impact on strategic decision-making and long-term financial positioning. The in-depth nature of due diligence audits enables companies to identify hidden risks, such as contingent liabilities or underperforming assets, which may not be captured in statutory audits. This allows businesses to make more informed decisions, particularly when involved in major transactions such as mergers, acquisitions, or securing external funding. Furthermore, due diligence audits provide a broader view of the company’s operational and financial health, leading to improved risk management and better resource allocation.
A notable finding of the research is that companies that undergo both types of audits—statutory for compliance and due diligence for strategic purposes—tend to perform better in terms of financial growth and market stability. These companies exhibit higher profitability ratios, improved liquidity management, and a stronger capital base compared to those that rely solely on statutory audits. Moreover, due diligence audits were found to be particularly beneficial in industries with high regulatory oversight or sectors prone to market volatility, as they provide companies with the foresight to adjust their financial strategies accordingly.
The study also highlights several challenges faced by companies in Cameroon regarding audits. For many businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the cost of conducting a due diligence audit can be prohibitive. Additionally, there is often a lack of understanding of the added value that due diligence audits can offer beyond statutory compliance, leading some companies to overlook this important financial tool.
In conclusion, the research underscores the importance of integrating both statutory and due diligence audits to enhance the financial performance and position of companies in Cameroon. While statutory audits ensure legal and financial compliance, due diligence audits offer valuable insights that support strategic decision-making and risk management. The study recommends that companies, particularly those engaging in complex financial transactions or operating in volatile industries, adopt a dual-audit approach to safeguard their financial stability and promote sustainable growth.
