CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Study

Due to increasing self-service and shifting customer lifestyles, packaging’s position in the current competitive landscape has evolved. Since businesses are becoming more and more interested in using packaging to promote their products, packaging has evolved into a sales promotion strategy in and of itself. Having a memorable presentation affects perception, and will keep customers returning again and again(Pohtam, 2016).

The effect of packaging on consumer behavior is significant: in a 2018 survey, product packaging design influenced 72% of American consumers’ purchase decisions, while 67% stated that the packaging materials did. This is because packaging is the first thing buyers see while shopping or browsing. If a brand’s retail product packaging, for instance, looks attractive and compelling, buyers will likely form a positive perception of the brand(Dillon, 2024)

A study on the role of packaging on consumer buying behavior in Patan District indicated that nowadays competitive environment the role of packaging has changed due to increasing self-service and changing consumers’ lifestyles(Choyal, 2023). The consumer’s buying decision also stimulated by the packaging quality, color, wrapper, and other characteristics of packaging. Packaging is a whole package that becomes an ultimate selling proposition, which stimulates impulse buying behavior(Berger et al., 2019).

According to a recent survey, on average, a South African household spent 4.5% of their total household consumption budget on clothing and footwear. Across the different population groups, Black African households spent a higher proportion (6.8%) of their consumption expenditure on clothing and footwear, relative to the proportions spent by their Coloured (5.1%), Indian/Asian (3.3%) and White (2.1%) counterparts(Dhurup, 2014)

Packaging is always an essential component of the consumer goods industry. It is a key element that determines the success or failure of the product. Consumers are often attracted towards visually appealing products. Packaging plays a vital role in delivering the main attribute to the consumers. Effective packaging design can enhance the overall appeal of a product and create an everlasting image in consumer’s minds. However, the intensifying competition in the market underscores the importance of providing exceptional products and services to meet the growing demands of consumers. Packaging can play a crucial role in this regard by creating a positive image of the product and the brand, providing product information, and conveying a sense of quality and safety(Choyal, 2023)

According to Jusuf (2015) package appeals consumer’s attentiveness towards a certain brand, increases its image, and stimulates consumer’s perceptions about a product(167-Libre.Pdf, n.d.). Similarly, Packaging plays a significant part in marketing communications and can be one of the most crucial elements affecting a consumer’s purchasing choice(Ahmad et al., 2012). The study of packaging, its components, and their effects on consumers’ purchasing decisions is an important topic in this context since it aimed to maximize the effectiveness of packaging in a purchasing environment. Packaging works as an instrument for differentiation, and helps consumers to decide the product from wide range of parallel products, packaging also stimulates customer’s buying behavior(Subramanian, 2017).

However, others focus on distinct elements of packaging and their influence on consumer purchasing behavior(Omamuzo & Okeke, 2023). Furthermore, some researchers explore the impact of packaging and its features on consumer’s whole purchase decision(Redine et al., 2023), whereas, some others on each step of consumer’s decision making process(Dhurup, 2014). It is worthy to note that the processes of thinking and deeds that go into purchasing and using a product are referred to as buying behavior (Redine et al., 2023). The final consumer’s purchasing behavior is referred to as consumer buying behavior. The success of a company or business depends heavily on how customers respond to its marketing strategies has a major impact on the performance of the company.

In today’s competitive consumer landscape, packaging plays a far more significant role than merely enclosing a product. It acts as a silent yet powerful tool for marketing and brand communication. Particularly in industries such as cosmetics, where aesthetics influence perception, the design of a product’s packaging—including its color, shape, and structure—can significantly impact the consumer’s initial reaction and subsequent purchasing decision. Packaging often becomes the first point of emotional connection with a product.

This study, titled “The Effects of Packaging on Consumer Impulse Buying Behavior of Cosmetic Products: The Case of Bambili Neighborhood,” is timely and relevant. It is justified by the growing need to understand the relationship between visually appealing packaging and consumer behavior, especially in spontaneous or impulse buying. Bambili, with its diverse and youthful population influenced by modern fashion and beauty trends, provides a suitable setting for examining this dynamic. The research contributes to filling a contextual and empirical gap by exploring how packaging features influence consumers’ unplanned purchases.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Several firms have been shying away from the importance of packaging on consumer buying decision. Many organizations are not conscious that the manner in which they package their products impacts the manner in which they can be offered to shoppers. This is on the grounds that numerous purchasers are normally drawn in with pleasant looking articles may handily purchase an item since it is looking great. The manufacturing industry specifically has for a long time would not change the packaging of its item. Particularly when compared to as many of its competitors have done. This has affected their sales especially in Bambili where its competitors are doing something different. The purpose of this study therefore is to investigate the effects of packaging on consumer impulse buying behavior. Despite the wide use of attractive packaging (

Although many cosmetic brands extensively use attractive packaging features such as eye-catching colors, creative shapes, and elegant designs to entice consumers, there is limited empirical research evaluating the actual impact of these packaging elements on unplanned buying behavior. Most of the available literature emphasizes the role of packaging in planned purchase decisions, leaving a critical gap in understanding its role in impulse buying.

This oversight is particularly evident in local settings like Bambili, where product presentation significantly influences buying decisions, especially among the youth and student populations. Despite the prevalence of visually appealing packaging on cosmetic products in local markets, little academic effort has been made to assess whether and how these attributes trigger unplanned purchases. This study aims to address this gap by empirically investigating the influence of packaging color, wrapper design, and innovation on impulse buying behavior among cosmetic consumers in Bambili.
