Transportation systems are vital for the functioning of urban areas, facilitating the movement of people and goods. They are essential for economic development, social interaction, and access to services. Understanding public perception of these systems is crucial, as it can significantly influence their effectiveness and the overall quality of life in urban settings. This background will explore the global context of transportation systems, the challenges they face, and then focus specifically on the transportation landscape in Bamenda, Cameroon, examining public perceptions and their implications.
Transportation systems are the backbone of urban infrastructure. They enable economic activities by connecting businesses with consumers and suppliers. Efficient transportation networks reduce travel time and costs, which enhances productivity and competitiveness in local and global markets. Furthermore, transportation systems play a critical role in ensuring accessibility to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. For instance, a well-functioning public transport system can significantly improve access for marginalized communities, thereby promoting social equity and inclusion (Cervero & Golub, 2007).
Moreover, transportation systems have a profound impact on environmental sustainability. The shift towards greener modes of transport, such as public transit, cycling, and walking, can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve urban air quality. As cities grapple with the challenges of climate change, sustainable transportation solutions are increasingly recognized as essential for creating livable urban environments (Littman, 2020).
Public perception and trust in transportation systems are crucial for their success. If citizens do not feel safe or comfortable using public transit, they may opt for private vehicles, which can worsen congestion and environmental issues. Studies have shown that public perception is influenced by various factors, including the reliability of services, safety, and the overall quality of the transportation experience (Buehler & Puncher, 2012).
In Africa, transportation systems are characterized by significant disparities between urban and rural areas. Urban centers often face unique challenges, including rapid population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of formal public transport options. The continent is experiencing first-time urbanization, with projections indicating that by 2030, over 50% of Africa’s population will reside in urban areas (United Nations, 2018). This rapid urbanization places immense pressure on existing transportation systems, leading to increased demand for mobility services.
Many African countries struggle with infrastructure deficiencies, including poorly maintained roads and limited public transit options. In urban areas, informal transport systems, such as motorcycle taxis and shared minibuses, have emerged to fill the gaps left by formal public transport. While these informal systems provide essential mobility, they often lack regulation and safety standards, raising concerns about passenger safety and service quality (Mwanza, 2019)
public perception of transportation systems in Africa is shaped by experiences with congestion, safety concerns, and the reliability of services. Research indicates that many individuals express distrust in public transit systems, often citing concerns about safety, cleanliness, and reliability. This distrust can lead to a preference for private transportation, contributing to urban congestion and environmental degradation (Mwanza, 2019). the perceived quality of service significantly impacts users’ choices. Factors such as vehicle condition, frequency of service, and customer service influence public attitudes toward transit systems. In many cases, residents may opt for informal transport options due to their perceived convenience, even if these options are less safe or reliable (Buehler & Puncher, 2012).
Cameroon is a lower income country located in Central Africa .The country has a population of approximately 25 million people with over 5o% living in urban areas (National Institute Of Statistics 2015).Cameroon’s urban population is projected to grow rapidly , with the urban population expected to 75% of the total population by 2050 (United Nation,2018).The rapid urbanization of Cameroon presents significant challenges for transportation development particularly in terms of providing efficient and effective transportation services that meet the needs of a growing urban population .
Bamenda, the capital of the North West Region of Cameroon, is a city characterized by its unique geographic and cultural landscape. With a population of over 400,000, Bamenda serves as a significant urban center in the country, attracting people from surrounding rural areas for trade, education, and healthcare. The city’s transportation system is crucial for facilitating mobility and supporting economic activities.
Bamenda’s transportation system comprises various modes, including road transportation, motorcycle taxis, and public buses. Road transport is the primary mode of transport, with a mix of private vehicles, motorcycles, and shared taxis (locally known as “bendskins”). However, the road network is often in a state of disrepair, leading to challenges in mobility and accessibility.
Motorcycle taxis have become increasingly popular in Bamenda, offering a flexible and often quicker alternative to traditional taxis. They are particularly useful for navigating congested urban areas and poorly maintained roads. However, the rise of motorcycle taxis also raises concerns about safety, as accidents involving these vehicles are common.
Bamenda faces several challenges regarding its transportation system. One of the most pressing issues is the quality of infrastructure. The condition of roads in Bamenda is often poor, with potholes and inadequate maintenance leading to difficulties in travel. This impacts the reliability of transport services and contributes to traffic congestion.
Traffic congestion is a significant problem in Bamenda, particularly during peak hours. The rapid urbanization and increase in the number of vehicles have led to significant traffic jams, which exacerbate travel times and affect the overall efficiency of the transportation system. According to local reports, residents often spend considerable time in traffic, leading to frustration and decreased productivity.
By examining the global context of transportation systems and narrowing down to the specific challenges in Bamenda, this background provides a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing public perception. The need for improved infrastructure, enhanced safety measures, and greater community engagement is evident as key strategies to foster positive perceptions and ultimately improve the transportation landscape in Bamenda.
1.2 Statement of The Problem
The city of Bamenda, a rapidly growing urban center in Cameroon, faces challenges in its transportation systems. The city’s poor road infrastructure, frequent accident, the lack of a well planned transportation network results in chaotic traffic management, leading to frequent congestion, especially in the city center. Another pressing issue is the safety of commuters, particularly with the widespread use of motorbike taxis (“bend skins”). While these motorbikes offer flexibility and access to remote areas, their unregulated operations and lack of proper safety measures have led to a high incidence of road accidents in the city of Bamenda.
The combination of these factors mentioned above has resulted to a transportation system that is often perceived as inefficient inconvenient by the residents of Bamenda .This negative perception have significant implications for the city economic development ,social well-being ,and overall quality of life .Therefor understanding the public perception of transportation services in Bamenda is crucial for developing effective strategies to improve the city’s transportation system and enhance the overall mobility experience of its residents .
