The global economy has witnessed significant changes in supply chain dynamics, particularly in developed countries, where the emphasis on efficiency, responsiveness, and customer satisfaction has intensified. Real-time communication (RTC) has emerged as a pivotal factor influencing supply chain performance. This study aims to explore how RTC affects various aspects of supply chain performance within organizations in developed nations. Supply chain management (SCM) has evolved from traditional models focused primarily on cost reduction and efficiency to more integrated approaches that emphasize agility and customer-centricity (Christopher, 2016). In developed economies, where competition is fierce and customer expectations are high, organizations have recognized the necessity of adopting advanced communication technologies to enhance their supply chain capabilities (Cohen Roussel, 2005).
Real-time communication refers to the instantaneous exchange of information between stakeholders within the supply chain, facilitated by technologies such as cloud computing, IoT (Internet of Things), and mobile communication tools. RTC enables organizations to share critical data regarding inventory levels, order status, demand forecasts, and logistics operations promptly (Kumar et al., 2019). RTC provides real-time visibility into supply chain processes, allowing organizations to monitor operations continuously. This visibility aids in proactive decision-making and helps identify potential disruptions before they escalate (Harrison Van Hoek, 2011). The authors highlight the need for integration across various functions within the supply chain, including suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and customers. This integration is essential for improving efficiency and responsiveness.
Supply chain performance encompasses the efficient coordination of various elements, including transportation, accommodation, customer service, and other logistical aspects that contribute to a seamless travel experience. Timely communication regarding bookings, cancellations, and changes significantly impacts customer satisfaction (Kwortnik Thompson, 2009). The travel and tour agency sector is an important component of the global economy, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. According to the World Travel Tourism Council (2021), the travel and tourism industry accounted for 10.4% of global GDP and created 319 million jobs in 2019. Kwortnik and Thompson (2009) focused on the concept of Service Experience Management (SEM) and its significance in bridging the gap between service marketing and operations. They argued that understanding and managing the entire service experience, help’s in customer interactions with service providers which is very important in enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Furthermore according to Baker and McMahon, they emphasize on the adoption of systems like Global Distribution Systems (GDS) that allows travel agencies to access real-time information on flight availability, pricing, and bookings (Baker McMahon, 2008). This facilitates informed decision-making and enhances customer service. Baker and McMahon highlight the importance of collaboration among supply chain partners. They discuss how building strong relationships with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders can enhance overall supply chain performance.
Real-time communication has emerged as a critical factor influencing supply chain performance in organizations across Central Africa. The region is characterized by diverse logistical challenges and infrastructural deficits, benefits significantly from technologies that facilitate immediate information exchange. According to a study by Manda et al. (2021), real-time communication tools such as instant messaging and video conferencing enhance coordination among supply chain partners, leading to improved decision-making processes. This immediacy allows organizations to respond swiftly to market changes, manage inventory levels effectively, and reduce lead times. Furthermore, the integration of real-time data analytics enables firms to monitor supply chain activities continuously, thereby identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies that can be addressed promptly (Manda et al., 2021). Such improvements not only optimize operational efficiency but also contribute to customer satisfaction through timely deliveries and enhanced service quality.
Moreover, the impact of real-time communication extends beyond internal operations; it plays a vital role in fostering collaboration with external stakeholders. In Central Africa, where many businesses operate within informal networks or face regulatory uncertainties, establishing reliable communication channels is essential for building trust and ensuring compliance (Kibera & Karanja, 2022). Effective real-time communication facilitates transparency in transactions and enhances relationships with suppliers and customers alike. A report by the African Development Bank (2023) highlights that organizations leveraging digital platforms for real-time interactions have reported increased agility in their supply chains, allowing them to adapt more readily to disruptions caused by political instability or natural disasters prevalent in the region. Consequently, the strategic implementation of real-time communication technologies not only bolsters supply performance but also positions organizations for sustainable growth amidst the unique challenges faced in Central Africa.
In the developing economies like Cameroon, Scholars argue that the integration of real-time communication technologies enhances information flow and decision-making processes within supply chains. For instance, Adebayo and Makanjuola (2021) highlight that timely communication enables organizations to respond swiftly to market demands and supply disruptions, ultimately leading to improved operational efficiency. In the context of Cameroon, where logistical challenges and infrastructural deficits often hinder supply chain effectiveness, the adoption of real-time communication tools can mitigate these issues by fostering collaboration among stakeholders. This is particularly relevant in sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing, where coordination between suppliers, distributors, and retailers is crucial for maintaining product availability and quality (Njeuma et al., 2020).
Furthermore, the impact of real-time communication on organizational supply performance is underscored by its role in enhancing transparency and accountability across supply chains. According to Ngwa et al. (2022), effective communication channels facilitate better tracking of inventory levels and order statuses, allowing organizations to optimize their stock management practices. In Cameroon, where informal trading practices are prevalent, the establishment of structured communication frameworks can significantly reduce information asymmetry between suppliers and buyers. This reduction in uncertainty not only boosts supplier confidence but also improves customer satisfaction by ensuring timely deliveries and accurate order fulfillment (Tchouawou et al., 2021). As such, the strategic implementation of real-time communication technologies stands out as a critical lever for enhancing supply performance in Cameroonian organizations, positioning them for greater competitiveness in both local and global markets.
1.2 Statement of the Research Problem
The research problem at the core of this study focuses on the effect of real-time communication on supply chain performance of Timrey travel & tourism, where customers are sometimes frustrated because of inadequate information after obtaining their flight ticket or when their goods are on transit. As supply chains grow increasingly complex and globalized, the ability to communicate effectively and promptly becomes crucial to maintaining operational efficiency. Traditional communication methods, often characterized by delays and a lack of integration, can lead to misalignments between suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. These misalignments may result in increased lead times, higher operational costs, and diminished customer satisfaction. This research seeks to explore how the adoption of real-time communication tools such as instant messaging, video conferencing, and integrated data-sharing platforms can mitigate these challenges by fostering timely information exchange and collaborative decision-making.
Furthermore, the study aims to assess the tangible benefits that real-time communication can bring to supply chain performance metrics, such as responsiveness, flexibility, and overall productivity. In examining various case studies and industry examples, the research will investigate how organizations utilizing real-time communication tools can better anticipate disruptions, manage inventory levels, and enhance coordination among different supply chain partners. Additionally, it will explore the potential barriers to implementing these technologies, such as resistance to change or the need for training. In providing a comprehensive analysis of both the advantages and challenges associated with real-time communication in supply chains, this research intends to offer valuable insights for organizations seeking to leverage technology to achieve competitive advantage in an increasingly dynamic market landscape
