CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Containerization has brought significant changes in the fields of logistics and cargo operations in the maritime industry. One of those noticeable changes is the way goods are easily transported, stores and handled in ports and by standardizing the dimensions or the size of this shipping containers, there have been innovation in international trade which has been made more efficient, reliable and cost effective. One of the companies that has been greatly impacts by containerization is MAERSK Ltd, operating at the Douala seaport Cameroon.

1.1         Background to the study

Containerization is a fundamental concept in the field of logistics and the cargo industry. It refers to the method of transporting goods and commodities in standardized containers, of various sizes and forms, facilitating their efficient handling, storage and movement across various modes of transportation, such as ships, trains, and trucks, without the need for individual handling of the cargo itself (Song, D. W. & Lee, P. T. 2016). Containerization began to gain a wide spread as of the 1950s with the introduction of the first container vessel ‘ideal X’ by Malcom McLean. prior to this innovation, the technology for handling general cargo was done through the process of break bulk shipping which was very slow and labor intensive. The key feature of containerization is the use of standardized, rectangular containers made of durable materials such as steel. These containers come in various sizes, with the most common being 20 feet or 40 feet in length. The standardization of containers allows for seamless integration and compatibility between different modes of transportation, it allow them to be easily handled, stacked, and secured throughout the entire logistics supply chain” (Rejeb et al., 2019). Containerization streamlines the process of transporting goods that is by minimizing manual labor, reducing loading and unloading times, and enabling faster transshipment between different modes of transportation” (McCalla, R. J. & Nguyen, 2018). This method minimizes the need for multiple handling operations, reducing the risk of damage, loss, and theft thereby enhancing overall efficiency.

Containerization enables seamless coordination and collaboration between shippers, carriers, freight forwarders, and other parties involved in the transportation and distribution of goods. As containers are traceable and can be easily monitored through advanced tracking technologies such as GPS and RFID, which enables real time monitoring of cargo location and status, it enhances visibility and transparency throughout the supply chain. (Bektas & Cipcigan, 2018). The widespread adoption of containerization has significantly facilitated global trade, it has simplified international logistics and reduced barriers to trade by providing a standardized and secure method for transporting goods across borders since Containers could easily transferred from one transportation mode to another, ensuring smoother international transactions and reducing the complexities of customs procedures (Rodrigue et Al.,2020).The use of containers enhances the security of cargo by providing a sealed and lockable environment, protecting goods from theft, damage, and exposure to harsh external elements” (Dinwoodie et al., 2019).

Containerization rapidly gained popularity, initially in North America and Europe and eventually spreading globally. The ease of container handling and transport led to the establishment of container terminals and the strengthening of port infrastructure worldwide (de Langen, P. W. 2020).Containerization In developed countries such as in Germany, has rapidly evolved as a crucial mode of transportation and has enhanced Germany’s global trade by streamlining cargo handling, reducing transit times, and lowering overall transportation costs making the country has one of the largest container ports in Europe, Hamburg with a throughput capacity of 1.2 million containers this has played a significant role in intermodal transport connections, especially with the country’s excellent railway infrastructure. In the United States, containerization has grown substantially and has played a vital role in connecting Portland to international markets, fostering economic growth, attracting trade activities and now the country has some of the busiest container ports globally, such as the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach making it the second-largest exporter in the world. Containerization has been crucial for Australia’s vast and geographically dispersed economy, facilitating efficient transport of goods between its major ports and global markets.

In developing countries, such as Ghana, Nigeria and south Africa; their port services has encouraged Containerization since this has brought about positive changes by improving these countries’ connectivity to the global market, reducing transportation costs, and fostering economic development. Containers in Nigeria is the primary mode of transportation for international trade, Apapa Port, located in Lagos, Nigeria, is the country’s busiest container port, with a capacity of

  1. 8 million TEUs, The South Africa’s container industry has grown tenfold since the early 2000s with Durban handling over 70% of South Africa’s container traffic, making it one of the largest container ports in In Cameroon, The introduction of containerization especially at the kribi and Limbe seaports, has likely boosted efficiency, attracted international trade, and contributed to the economic development of these regions, it has witnessed significant growth in recent years. Douala seaport as one of the major ports in Cameroon, has likely experienced increased efficiency and reduced costs due to containerization. Maersk SA, officially known as A.P Moller-Maersk being a global shipping giant with a vast fleet of 700 vessels and a comprehensive network of trade routes, has been at the forefronts by actively promoting and adopting unitization standards, transforming the way goods are transported globally and driving the growth of container shipping playing a significant role in facilitating international trade through this port, contributing to Cameroon’s economic growth. The Formation of international organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the establishment of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1947 played a crucial role in standardizing container dimensions and specifications, leading to increased interoperability and efficiency in containerized cargo transportation” (Notteboom & Rodrigue, 2020, p. 9) further promoting the global adoption of containerization practices.

1.2              Statement of the research problem

The dynamic landscape of global logistics has witnessed a paradigm shift with the widespread adoption of containerization , In the recent years and presently, most ports are faced with the serious challenge of cargo after having to stay longer than it suppose time of stay while in the port due to problem associated with non-containerized goods. The phenomenon leads to a situation where so many ship have to queue while waiting to be tied up at berth, from where and when cargo handling operations can commence on them. This in turn increases the waiting time of ship and eventually increases turnaround time for the ship. This is an indication that port is less productive with non-containerized goods. Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, has been at the forefront of this change, particularly in its operations at the Douala seaport in Cameroon. Containerization has had a profound impact on Maersk’s logistics and cargo operations at the Douala seaport. The introduction of standardized, intermodal containers has enabled more efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods, reducing handling time and improving supply chain reliability. However, the implementation of containerization has also presented Maersk with a range of challenges that the company has to navigate.

One of the key changes observed in Maersk’s operations is the increased automation and digitization of cargo handling processes, The company has invested in advanced container handling equipment, such as gantry cranes and automated stacking systems, to improve the speed and efficiency of container loading and unloading. Additionally, Maersk has implemented digital technologies, such as tracking systems and data analytics, to optimize its container management and logistics operations. Despite these advancements, Maersk has faced several challenges in adapting to the containerization of cargo at the Douala seaport. The port’s infrastructure, which was primarily designed for traditional break-bulk cargo handling, has had to be upgraded to accommodate the increased volume and size of containers, this has required significant investments in port expansion, dredging, and the acquisition of specialized container handling equipment. Furthermore, the integration of containerization into Maersk’s existing logistics and supply chain operations has presented operational and organizational challenges. The company has to train and up skill its workforce to handle the new technologies and processes, while also adapting its internal workflows and communication channels to ensure seamless coordination across different departments and stakeholders.

To address these challenges, Maersk has implemented a range of strategies and initiatives such as collaborated with the port authorities and other stakeholders to improve the port’s infrastructure and streamline container handling processes, it has also invested in employee training and development programs to equip its workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage the containerized cargo operations effectively. Additionally, the company has leveraged its global expertise and resources to share best practices and innovative solutions with its local operations in Douala, they have also explored opportunities to integrate its container operations with other modes of transportation, such as rail and road, to create a more efficient and resilient supply chain.

All These happenings, interest the researcher to undertake a study with the objective of studying how containerization has impacted the logistics, cargo operations and productivity aspects of the port and most especially that of a container shipping company. therefore a tailored research study focusing on the impacts of containerization in logistics and cargo operations within the specific contexts of Maersk and Douala Seaport is essential to fill this research void, provide actionable measures for industry stakeholders and policymakers, and pave the way for optimized container handling practices and sustainable growth in the maritime sector.

H0: there is no significant impact for the use of containers in logistics and cargo operations activities in the port.

1.5.2        Specific hypotheses

  1. H0: Containerization hasn’t improved the efficiency of logistics and cargo operations at Maersk, Douala Sea port.
  2. H0: Maersk Ltd faces absolutely no limitations to the effective implementation of containerization at the Douala seaport.
