ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of adaptive teaching on the learning ability of learners with low vision in primary schools in Limbe Municipality, Cameroon. Adaptive teaching involves modifying instructional methods, materials, and environments to meet the diverse needs of students with visual impairments. Understanding its effectiveness is crucial for enhancing educational outcomes for these learners.

A mixed-method research approach was employed, combining quantitative assessments of learning abilities with qualitative interviews of teachers, parents, and educational specialists. The study aimed to evaluate how adaptive teaching strategies influence academic performance and engagement among learners with low vision.

The findings indicate that adaptive teaching significantly enhances the learning abilities of learners with low vision. Specific strategies, such as using large print materials, audio resources, and specialized classroom layouts, were found to improve students’ comprehension, participation, and overall academic performance. Learners who received tailored support demonstrated better engagement and achievement compared to those with traditional teaching methods.

Teachers and parents reported that adaptive teaching strategies, including individualized instruction and assistive technologies, play a crucial role in supporting learners with low vision. However, challenges such as inadequate training for educators, limited availability of adaptive resources, and lack of awareness about low vision needs were identified as barriers to effective implementation.

The study concludes that adaptive teaching practices are essential for improving the learning abilities of learners with low vision. Recommendations include enhancing teacher training on adaptive methods, increasing access to assistive technologies, and fostering a supportive learning environment. These measures can lead to better educational outcomes and increased inclusion for learners with low vision in Limbe Municipality.
