Abstract
This study analyzes the delays in executing public projects and their effects on the population of Fako Division, Cameroon. Public projects, ranging from infrastructure to social services, are crucial for the development of the region and the well-being of its residents. However, many of these projects experience significant delays, which negatively affect the population’s access to essential services and economic opportunities. This research seeks to identify the main causes of these delays and assess their impact on the local population.
The study employs a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative data from public project timelines and budgets with qualitative data gathered through interviews and surveys with project stakeholders, government officials, and affected community members. The primary causes of delays identified include inadequate funding, bureaucratic inefficiencies, contractor-related issues, and political interference. These factors lead to prolonged project durations, cost overruns, and reduced project quality.
The delays in public project execution have far-reaching effects on the population of Fako Division. Key impacts include the delay in accessing critical infrastructure such as roads, schools, and hospitals, which hampers the region’s economic development and quality of life. Delays in water supply and sanitation projects exacerbate health issues, particularly in rural areas. Additionally, stalled projects create uncertainty and frustration among the local population, leading to a loss of trust in public institutions.
The findings highlight the need for improved project management practices, more transparent allocation of funds, and better oversight mechanisms to mitigate the causes of delays. The study recommends that government authorities in Fako Division adopt stricter project monitoring systems, enhance contractor selection processes, and ensure timely disbursement of project funds to reduce delays and improve public service delivery.
In conclusion, delays in the execution of public projects in Fako Division have significant adverse effects on the population. Addressing these delays is critical for enhancing the region’s development prospects and improving the living standards of its residents. By streamlining project management processes and reducing bureaucratic hurdles, public authorities can ensure that public projects are completed on time, benefiting the population as intended.
