Abstract
This study examines the effectiveness of government interventions aimed at the social integration of street children in Buea, Cameroon. Street children, who are often marginalized and vulnerable, face numerous challenges that impact their well-being and social inclusion. The government’s role in addressing these challenges through various programs and policies is crucial for their successful integration into society.
The study assesses the nature of government interventions, including social welfare programs, educational opportunities, and healthcare services provided to street children. It investigates the extent to which these interventions have improved the living conditions and future prospects of these children. Key interventions include the establishment of rehabilitation centers, provision of scholarships for education, and access to health services.
Data was collected through interviews with government officials, social workers, and representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in supporting street children. Additionally, field observations and case studies of selected rehabilitation centers in Buea were conducted to gain insights into the practical implementation of these interventions.
The findings reveal that while government initiatives have led to notable improvements in some areas, there are still significant gaps that need to be addressed. For instance, the availability of rehabilitation centers and educational opportunities has increased, yet the resources and reach of these programs are often insufficient to cover the entire population of street children. Furthermore, challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of coordination between agencies, and limited public awareness continue to hinder the effectiveness of these interventions.
The study underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach that includes increased funding, enhanced coordination among government agencies and NGOs, and greater community involvement. Recommendations include expanding existing programs, improving the quality of services, and implementing more robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure that interventions are achieving their intended outcomes.
In conclusion, while the government’s efforts have made a positive impact on the social insertion of street children in Buea, there is a need for continued and enhanced support to address existing challenges. By addressing these issues, the government can better ensure the successful integration of street children into society, providing them with opportunities for a better future.
