ABSTRACT

The international legal framework for the elimination of nuclear weapons plays a critical role in promoting global peace and security. This study appraises the existing treaties, conventions, and initiatives aimed at disarmament, analyzing their effectiveness and implications for international relations. By examining key legal instruments and the challenges to their implementation, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape surrounding nuclear disarmament.

The study begins by outlining the historical context of nuclear weapons and the emergence of international concern over their proliferation. The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), established in 1968, serves as a cornerstone of the disarmament regime. The NPT’s three pillars—non-proliferation, disarmament, and peaceful use of nuclear energy—are critically analyzed, highlighting their significance in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting disarmament efforts.

The research also explores other key legal frameworks, including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and various regional treaties such as the Treaty of Tlatelolco for Latin America. These agreements reflect the international community’s commitment to achieving a world free of nuclear weapons and underscore the importance of multilateral cooperation.
