Abstract

This study assesses the social and environmental impacts of palm oil mill effluent (POME) in Ako Sub-Division, North West Region of Cameroon. With the growing palm oil industry in the region, understanding the effects of palm oil mill operations on local communities and ecosystems has become crucial. This research aims to evaluate how POME affects both social conditions and environmental quality, and to suggest measures to mitigate negative impacts.

A mixed-method approach was utilized, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. Data were collected through field surveys, interviews with local residents and mill operators, and environmental sampling. Key aspects of the study include the assessment of water and soil quality, analysis of health implications for local communities, and the socio-economic impacts of palm oil mill effluent.

The findings indicate significant environmental concerns associated with palm oil mill effluent. Water samples from rivers and streams affected by POME exhibited high levels of pollutants, including Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and total suspended solids. These contaminants have led to reduced water quality, adversely affecting aquatic life and reducing the availability of clean water for local communities. Soil analysis revealed contamination with heavy metals and reduced soil fertility, which impacts agricultural productivity.

Socially, the study found that the pollution from POME has led to health issues among residents, including skin rashes and respiratory problems, primarily due to contaminated water and air. The loss of access to clean water sources has exacerbated the burden on women and children, who are primarily responsible for collecting water for household use. Additionally, the reduction in agricultural productivity due to soil degradation has led to economic difficulties for local farmers, affecting their livelihoods.

Community members reported limited awareness of the environmental impacts of palm oil mill operations and insufficient regulatory enforcement. This lack of knowledge and oversight has resulted in inadequate measures to manage and treat POME effectively. Local perceptions of the palm oil industry are mixed, with some acknowledging economic benefits such as job creation, while others emphasize the negative environmental and health impacts.

In conclusion, the palm oil industry in Ako Sub-Division has notable social and environmental impacts. The contamination of water and soil from palm oil mill effluent poses significant risks to both environmental sustainability and public health. To address these issues, it is essential to implement effective waste management practices, enhance regulatory frameworks, and increase community awareness and involvement. Sustainable practices and proper treatment of palm oil mill effluent can help mitigate adverse impacts and promote environmental and social well-being.
