Abstract
Early pregnancy among secondary school female students presents significant challenges that can adversely affect their academic performance and overall educational experience. This study assesses the impact of early pregnancy on the academic performance of female students in secondary schools within Buea Municipality, Cameroon. By exploring the relationship between early pregnancy and academic outcomes, the research aims to provide insights into the academic disruptions caused by early pregnancies and identify potential support mechanisms to mitigate these effects.
The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative component involves analyzing academic records of female students who have experienced early pregnancies compared to those who have not. This includes reviewing grades, attendance records, and graduation rates to evaluate the academic impact. A structured questionnaire is administered to gather data on students’ academic performance, their experiences with early pregnancy, and the support they have received from schools and family.
Qualitative data is collected through interviews and focus group discussions with affected students, teachers, school counselors, and parents. These discussions provide deeper insights into the personal, social, and educational challenges faced by pregnant students, including their ability to attend classes, complete assignments, and participate in extracurricular activities. Interviews with teachers and counselors explore the support mechanisms provided by schools and the effectiveness of these interventions in helping students continue their education.
The findings indicate that early pregnancy significantly affects the academic performance of female students in Buea Municipality. Pregnant students often face substantial interruptions in their education due to health issues, social stigma, and the need to care for their child. These disruptions result in lower academic performance, higher rates of school absenteeism, and a greater likelihood of dropping out. The study also highlights that the lack of adequate support systems and resources exacerbates the negative impact on academic achievements.
Teachers and school counselors report that while some schools have implemented support programs such as flexible class schedules and counseling services, these measures are often insufficient or inconsistently applied. The study identifies a need for more comprehensive support strategies, including tailored educational programs, counseling, and community outreach to address the unique needs of pregnant students and help them continue their education.
In conclusion, early pregnancy has a profound impact on the academic performance of secondary school female students in Buea Municipality. To mitigate these effects, it is recommended that schools and policymakers develop and implement more robust support systems that address the academic, social, and emotional needs of pregnant students. By providing targeted support and creating an inclusive educational environment, it is possible to help these students overcome challenges and achieve better academic outcomes.
