ABSTRACT

This study assesses employees’ perceptions of organizational culture and performance management practices at MTN Cameroon’s Buea branch. As an essential component of organizational effectiveness, understanding employee perceptions can help improve performance management strategies and overall productivity. This research aims to explore how organizational culture influences employees’ attitudes toward performance management practices and its subsequent impact on performance outcomes.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A structured questionnaire was distributed to a sample of employees across various departments within the Buea branch, focusing on aspects such as communication, leadership, teamwork, and values within the organizational culture. The survey included Likert-scale questions that measured employees’ perceptions of the organizational culture and performance management practices, as well as open-ended questions that allowed for more nuanced feedback.

The findings reveal that a significant portion of employees perceive MTN Cameroon’s organizational culture as supportive and collaborative. Respondents indicated that the company’s values promote innovation, teamwork, and open communication, which they believe enhance job satisfaction and performance. However, there were also concerns about certain aspects of performance management practices, such as feedback mechanisms and recognition programs. Many employees expressed the desire for more regular and constructive feedback on their performance, emphasizing that such practices are critical for their personal and professional development.

Quantitative analysis indicates a positive correlation between perceived organizational culture and employee engagement. Employees who view the culture as positive tend to report higher satisfaction with performance management practices and a stronger commitment to their roles. Conversely, those who perceive the culture negatively are less likely to be engaged and motivated, highlighting the crucial role of organizational culture in shaping employee attitudes toward performance management.

Qualitative insights from interviews with management staff provide further context to the survey results. Managers acknowledged the importance of aligning performance management practices with the organizational culture. They emphasized that a strong culture of recognition and support can drive better performance outcomes. However, they also recognized challenges, such as the need for improved training for managers on effective performance management and the importance of consistency in applying performance evaluation criteria.

The study identifies several key recommendations to enhance employee perceptions of organizational culture and performance management practices. Firstly, it suggests that MTN Cameroon should prioritize regular training programs for managers to foster effective communication and feedback skills. Secondly, establishing clear performance metrics that align with organizational values can help create transparency and accountability. Additionally, enhancing recognition programs to celebrate employee achievements can improve morale and motivation.

In conclusion, this assessment highlights the interconnectedness of organizational culture and performance management practices at MTN Cameroon’s Buea branch. By addressing employee concerns and fostering a positive culture that supports performance management initiatives, the organization can enhance employee satisfaction and overall performance, ultimately contributing to its success in a competitive telecommunications market.
