Abstract

This study provides an assessment of livestock production practices in Cameroon, with a specific focus on broiler and pig production in the Buea Sub-Division. Livestock production plays a critical role in Cameroon’s agriculture sector, contributing to food security and economic development. This research evaluates current practices, challenges, and opportunities in broiler and pig production within this region to understand their impact on productivity and sustainability.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data from surveys and qualitative insights from interviews with local farmers, agricultural extension officers, and industry experts. The study explores various aspects of broiler and pig production, including breeding practices, feeding regimes, health management, and marketing strategies.

Key findings indicate that broiler production in the Buea Sub-Division is characterized by intensive farming practices, with a focus on maximizing growth rates and feed efficiency. However, challenges such as high feed costs, disease outbreaks, and inadequate biosecurity measures are prevalent. Similarly, pig production is marked by a combination of smallholder and semi-commercial operations. Issues such as limited access to quality breeding stock, poor infrastructure, and health management problems are common.

The study also identifies opportunities for improving livestock production practices. These include the adoption of modern feeding techniques, better disease management protocols, and enhanced biosecurity measures. Training programs and access to veterinary services are recommended to address health management issues and improve overall productivity. Additionally, the development of value chains and market access strategies can help enhance the profitability and sustainability of both broiler and pig production.

The research highlights the importance of integrating sustainable practices and technological innovations to address the challenges faced by livestock producers. Implementing these recommendations could lead to more efficient production systems, improved animal welfare, and better economic outcomes for farmers in the Buea Sub-Division.

In conclusion, the assessment underscores the need for targeted interventions to support and improve broiler and pig production practices in Cameroon. By addressing existing challenges and leveraging opportunities, stakeholders can enhance livestock productivity and contribute to the overall development of the agricultural sector in the region.
