ABSTRACT

This study assesses the role of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and its influence on secondary school administration in Buea, Cameroon. The PTA plays a vital role in fostering collaboration between parents, teachers, and school administrators to enhance the management and functioning of schools. This research examines the effectiveness of the PTA in decision-making processes, resource allocation, and general school governance, focusing on how this collaboration impacts the administration of secondary schools. It also evaluates the extent to which PTAs participate in key administrative functions, including financial management, academic planning, infrastructure development, and discipline enforcement.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data. Surveys were distributed to a sample of parents, teachers, and school administrators in selected secondary schools in Buea, while interviews were conducted with PTA members and school officials to gather in-depth insights. The study also reviewed school documents, minutes of PTA meetings, and financial reports to assess the contributions of the PTA to school administration.

Findings from the study indicate that the PTA plays a significant role in supporting school administration by contributing financially to the development of school infrastructure, providing funds for extracurricular activities, and ensuring the welfare of students and teachers. However, the research reveals several challenges, including conflicts between PTA members and school administrators over financial transparency and accountability. Additionally, some parents lack active participation in PTA activities, which affects the association’s overall effectiveness. The study also found that PTA contributions are often unevenly distributed, with wealthier parents providing more support, leading to disparities in school resource allocation.

The research concludes that while the PTA is instrumental in enhancing the management of secondary schools in Buea, its effectiveness is hindered by issues related to governance, accountability, and equitable participation. The study recommends that clearer guidelines be established to ensure transparency in the handling of PTA funds. Furthermore, the active involvement of all parents should be encouraged through regular sensitization and engagement programs. The study also advocates for a stronger partnership between the PTA and school administration to ensure that decision-making processes are inclusive and aligned with the educational goals of the schools. In sum, the PTA has the potential to positively influence school administration, but greater attention must be given to overcoming the challenges that limit its full effectiveness.
