Abstract
Cocoa production is a critical agricultural activity in Cameroon, particularly in the Ekondo-Titi area of the Ndian Division, where it significantly contributes to local economies and livelihoods. However, pests and diseases present major challenges to cocoa production, resulting in substantial yield losses and economic setbacks for farmers. This study assesses the current practices, challenges, and effectiveness of pests and disease management in cocoa production in Ekondo-Titi. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from farmer surveys and yield records with qualitative insights from interviews with agricultural extension officers and cocoa farmers. Findings reveal that while farmers employ various pest and disease management strategies, including chemical and cultural methods, these practices are often hindered by factors such as high costs, limited access to quality inputs, and inadequate training. The study highlights the need for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, enhanced farmer education, and support systems to improve the efficacy of pest and disease control measures. Recommendations include the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, the provision of subsidies or financial support for farmers, and the strengthening of extension services to ensure better implementation of effective management practices. This research aims to contribute to the development of more resilient cocoa production systems in Ekondo-Titi, thereby enhancing productivity and sustainability in the face of persistent pest and disease challenges.
