Strategic procurement refers to the alignment of procurement activities with the broader objectives and goals of an organization, ensuring that the procurement function plays a critical role in achieving long-term success. It involves transforming an organization’s mission into actionable strategies that guide the planning, budgeting, and management of procurement operations (Mahmood, 2014).
This approach to procurement typically focuses on three key areas: developing and managing supplier relationships, streamlining internal procurement functions while coordinating with other departments, and leveraging technology to enhance procurement systems. Strategic procurement is widely regarded as a vital organizational function that can reduce costs, improve efficiency, foster reliable supplier partnerships, and enhance the overall quality of goods or services delivered (Magnus, 2016).
The procurement process follows a structured pathway that includes determining requirements, allocating budgets, conducting competitive bidding, signing contracts, delivering goods or services, and monitoring their utilization. This process serves dual purposes: achieving procurement-specific goals, such as managing risks and maintaining ethical standards, and addressing broader social, political, and economic priorities (Karanja & Kiarie, 2015). The growing importance of supply chain management, and the integral role of procurement within it, has been driven by increasing global competition, technological advancements, and the need to maintain a sustainable competitive edge. Procurement has evolved beyond its traditional focus on cost-saving measures to become a key component of strategic management, supporting the achievement of long-term business goals (Castells, 1996; Erridge, 1995; Möller, Rajala & Svahn, 2005).
Strategic procurement decision-making includes activities such as conducting internal needs assessments, evaluating supplier markets, collecting supplier information to build a diverse pool of potential vendors, and developing outsourcing strategies to strengthen supplier relationships. Following the development of procurement strategies, organizations engage in supplier selection, negotiate contracts, and implement processes for improving supply chain performance (Eyaa & Oluka, 2011).
Effective procurement relies on careful planning, execution, monitoring, and control. Neglecting any of these components can disrupt the procurement process and negatively impact an organization’s ability to meet its strategic objectives. Organizations must also balance internal priorities with external pressures, responding effectively to changing market dynamics while maintaining value and ethical standards in all procurement activities (Telgen, 2011).
In today’s globalized and competitive environment, strategic procurement emphasizes supplier relationship management, transparent communication, and the use of technology to streamline processes. These efforts are essential for organizations to remain agile and aligned with trends such as increased consumer demand for quality, heightened environmental awareness, and the need for transparency and ethical compliance (Thai, 2011).
Glotelho Douala, a prominent organization in its sector, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to efficient procurement practices that align with its strategic goals. As a leader in its industry, the company has built a strong reputation through its dedication to quality, operational excellence, and robust supplier relationships. This study explores the impact of strategic decision-making on procurement practices within Glotelho Douala, with the aim of uncovering how these practices contribute to the organization’s success and long-term sustainability.
