Abstract

This study assesses the farm management practices at the Buea Central Prison Farm in Lysoka and their implications for food production. The prison farm serves as a vital source of food supply for the prison population and contributes to local food production. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the current farm management practices, the challenges faced, and how these practices impact overall food production at the farm.

A mixed-method research design was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected through interviews with prison authorities, farm supervisors, and inmates involved in farming activities. Additionally, direct observations of the farming practices and an analysis of farm records provided insights into crop yields, livestock production, and overall farm productivity. The key areas of focus included land use, crop rotation, pest and disease management, labor allocation, and the use of agricultural inputs like fertilizers and tools.

The findings reveal that while the prison farm has potential for increased productivity, several challenges limit its effectiveness. These include insufficient farming equipment, outdated agricultural practices, and a lack of specialized training for inmates involved in farming. Additionally, the farm suffers from irregular supply of inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, which further hampers productivity. Labor constraints due to the prison’s population size and the limited working hours for inmates also impact the farm’s output.

Despite these challenges, the prison farm plays a significant role in providing food for the inmates and contributing to the local food supply. However, there is a need for improved farm management practices, including the adoption of modern farming techniques, better resource allocation, and training programs for both prison staff and inmates. Enhancing these aspects could lead to increased productivity and more efficient food production.

In conclusion, the Buea Central Prison Farm has the potential to significantly boost food production if appropriate farm management practices are adopted. The study recommends that prison authorities collaborate with agricultural experts to improve farm management, increase resource availability, and enhance the agricultural skills of inmates, thereby contributing to sustainable food production within the prison and the surrounding community.
