Abstract

This study assesses the perceptions of employees on the impact of privatization on welfare, with a focus on the Cameroon Tea Estate (CTE) in Tole, Cameroon. The privatization of state-owned enterprises has been a prominent policy measure in many developing countries, including Cameroon. While privatization aims to enhance efficiency and profitability, its effects on employee welfare remain a subject of debate. This research seeks to explore the perceptions of employees regarding changes in their welfare following the privatization of the CTE.

A descriptive research design was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected from 150 employees of the CTE through questionnaires and interviews. The study focused on various dimensions of welfare, including job security, working conditions, wages, health benefits, and overall job satisfaction. Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate the correlation between privatization and employee welfare.

The findings reveal mixed perceptions among employees regarding the impact of privatization on their welfare. A significant portion of employees reported improvements in operational efficiency and better access to resources post-privatization. However, concerns were raised about job security, with many employees experiencing fears of layoffs and reduced employment benefits. Additionally, there were reports of stagnation in wage growth and dissatisfaction with the quality of healthcare services provided by the company. Despite these concerns, some employees acknowledged improvements in the working environment and opportunities for professional development.

The study concludes that while privatization has brought about certain operational improvements at the CTE, its impact on employee welfare has been uneven. The research recommends that policymakers and private sector managers focus on mitigating the negative effects of privatization by ensuring job security, improving wage structures, and enhancing employee benefits. Furthermore, increased dialogue between management and employees could help address concerns and promote a more positive perception of privatization outcomes.
