Abstract
This study examines the role of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in enhancing gender emancipation in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Gender emancipation is crucial for achieving equality, improving economic opportunities, and promoting sustainable development in communities. Microfinance institutions have gained prominence as key players in providing financial services to underserved populations, particularly women, who often face barriers to accessing traditional banking services. This study aims to assess how MFIs contribute to empowering women, promoting their economic independence, and fostering gender equality in Buea Municipality.
A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 women who are clients of various microfinance institutions in Buea, along with in-depth interviews with 10 MFI managers. The questionnaire focused on women’s access to financial services, their economic activities, and the impact of microfinance on their livelihoods. Interviews with MFI managers provided insights into the institutions’ policies, practices, and strategies aimed at promoting gender emancipation.
The findings revealed that microfinance institutions play a significant role in enhancing gender emancipation among women in Buea Municipality. The majority of respondents reported that access to microfinance services enabled them to start or expand their small businesses, leading to increased income and improved living standards for their families. Many women noted that financial independence contributed to their confidence, decision-making power, and participation in community activities. Additionally, MFIs offered financial literacy training and entrepreneurship skills development, which equipped women with essential tools for managing their businesses and finances effectively.
However, challenges remain, including high-interest rates, limited loan amounts, and cultural barriers that hinder women’s full participation in economic activities. Some women expressed concerns about the sustainability of their businesses due to market fluctuations and competition. The study also identified a need for more tailored financial products that address the specific needs of women, such as loans for education, healthcare, and housing.
In conclusion, microfinance institutions in Buea Municipality significantly contribute to the enhancement of gender emancipation by providing women with access to financial resources, training, and support. To further strengthen this impact, it is recommended that MFIs adopt more inclusive practices, reduce interest rates, and develop innovative financial products that cater specifically to women’s needs. Policymakers should also support initiatives that promote women’s entrepreneurship and financial literacy, creating a more enabling environment for gender equality and economic empowerment.
