ABSTRACT

This study investigates the methods and effectiveness of teaching games and sports to children with physical disabilities in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Physical activity plays a critical role in the development and well-being of children with disabilities. Understanding how to effectively teach these activities can enhance their participation and benefits.

A mixed-method research approach was employed, including quantitative assessments of physical activity participation and qualitative interviews with educators, therapists, and parents. The study aimed to evaluate current teaching practices, identify challenges, and assess the impact on children’s physical and social development.

The findings reveal that teaching games and sports to children with physical disabilities requires specialized approaches tailored to their needs. Effective methods include adaptive physical education programs, individualized instruction, and the use of modified equipment. Children who participated in these adapted programs showed improvements in physical fitness, coordination, and social skills.

Challenges identified include limited access to adapted sports equipment, inadequate training for instructors, and insufficient support from schools and community organizations. Parents and educators emphasized the need for more inclusive programs and resources to facilitate the participation of children with physical disabilities.

The study concludes that specialized teaching methods and supportive environments are essential for successful engagement in games and sports by children with physical disabilities. Recommendations include expanding access to adapted sports programs, enhancing training for educators, and increasing community awareness and support. These measures can improve the physical and social development of children with disabilities in Buea Municipality.
