INTRODUCTION
1.1Background of Study
Forests are vital ecosystems that provide numerous benefits and essential resources, supporting biodiversity (Kok et al., 2017; Verkerk et al., 2022; Guegan et al., 2023) and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Forests also facilitate the interconnectedness of biodiversity and the health of indigenous peoples (Robinson et al., 2024). Research indicates that forests cover a substantial portion of the Earth’s landmass, playing a crucial role in maintaining global ecological balance and promoting human well-being worldwide (Boles Fassler, 2017; Soe & Yeo-Chang, 2019; Cimatti et al., 2023; Dong & Huang, 2023).
Forests are complex ecosystems that provide essential ecological services, including biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration (Verkerk et al., 2020), and clean water, while supporting community livelihoods, particularly at the local level (Anderegg et al., 2020; Heilmayr et al., 2020; De Frenne, 2021). These ecosystems also hold significant cultural and spiritual value for indigenous peoples, providing non-timber forest products and amenities, such as wildlife, berries, and biodiversity, which can be maintained through sustainable forest management practices (van Kooten et al., 2019; Moloise et al., 2024). However, forests face numerous challenges, including deforestation, habitat degradation, and climate-related issues (Tong et al., 2020; Dubale et al., 2023). Given the importance of forests and the threats they face, it is crucial that policymakers, researchers, and practitioners consider traditional forest management knowledge, wisdom, and cultural belief systems to promote sustainable forest management (SFM). The recent decline of non-wood timber forest products (NWFPs), particularly in developing countries, and the erosion of indigenous forest management practices, highlight the need to preserve and promote sustainable indigenous management practices (Chukwuone et al., 2020).
Traditional local knowledge forest management (TLKFM) has gained widespread recognition for its sustainable and harmonious approach to nature management (Rakatama & Pandit, 2020; Moloise et al., 2024). Embedded in the collective wisdom of local communities, indigenous knowledge encompasses a deep understanding of forest ecosystems, ecological dynamics, and seasonal patterns, allowing for effective and sustainable forest management.
The cultural practices and traditional knowledge of indigenous communities hold significant value in achieving sustainable forest management (SFM) (Ludwig & El-Hani, 2020; Alule et al., 2023). This ancient wisdom, passed down through generations, is deeply intertwined with cultural norms and belief systems, emphasizing the need to incorporate it into current forest management strategies (Ludwig & El-Hani, 2020). Although indigenous forest management practices may differ from conventional scientific forestry, they have proven effective in maintaining forest ecosystems and conserving resources (Chukwuone et al., 2020). Integrating local knowledge into mainstream conservation policies and practices is a promising approach to enhancing forest sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation (Lazdinis et al., 2019; Mansourian et al., 2020). This integrated approach not only supports SFM but also promotes cultural preservation, community empowerment, and recognition of indigenous rights (Ludwig & El-Hani, 2020; Mansourian et al., 2020). Given the global interest in SFM, it is essential to involve diverse stakeholders, including indigenous communities, who possess valuable traditional knowledge systems related to forest ecosystems.
Local knowledge, defined as a cumulative body of knowledge, practice, and belief transmitted through generations (Gómez-Baggethun, 2022; Hallberg-Sramek et al., 2023), plays a significant role in forest management. In European countries, local knowledge is often incorporated into national economic planning principles, while in cases where it conflicts with economic goals, it is reflected in nature protection or research activities promoting biodiversity. However, in developing countries, including those in Africa, forest management planning is often underdeveloped or nonexistent, making it challenging to integrate traditional indigenous knowledge into sustainable forest management (SFM) practices (Hallberg-Sramek et al., 2023). Despite this, insights from indigenous knowledge in developing countries can inform SFM planning principles, highlighting the importance of considering local knowledge in forest management decisions.
The inclusion of local communities in sustainable forest management in Cameroon is mandated by forestry law No 94/01 of 1994 and environmental protection law No 96/12 of 1996 (Lambi et al., 2012; MINEF, 1998). As the eighth most forested country globally, with over 30 forest reserves, Cameroon recognizes the importance of community involvement in forest management (Kimengsi & Ngala, 2018). This approach is critical for ensuring the sustainable use of forest resources and promoting biodiversity conservation.
Participatory forest management has been extensively studied, both globally and in Cameroon (Eilola et al., 2015; Husseini et al., 2016; Schreckenberg et al., 2006; Kimengsi & Ngala, 2018). These studies have highlighted the benefits of community-led forest management, including improved forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods. However, as Cameroon revises its forest policy, there is a need for empirical research that provides insights into the complex relationships between forests, communities, and policymakers (FAO, 2010; Piabuo et al., 2018).
In the Santchou Faunal Reserve, indigenous communities have developed complex systems of forest management, incorporating traditional practices, rituals, and taboos to regulate access to forest resources (.Kimengsi et al., 2021 ). These practices have been shown to promote forest regeneration, maintain soil fertility, and conserve biodiversity .However, indigenous knowledge and forest management practices are facing increasing threats from external factors, including deforestation, urbanization, and climate change . These factors undermine the sustainability of indigenous forest management practices and the preservation of traditional knowledge.To address these challenges, recent publications emphasize the need for collaborative approaches that recognize and support indigenous knowledge in forest management (Kimengsi et al., 2021 ). This includes promoting participatory forest management, securing land tenure rights, and providing capacity-building programs for indigenous communities.
To inform effective forest policy revisions, it is crucial to harness the experiences and perspectives of indigenous communities living in the Santchou Faunal Reserve’s humid montane landscapes. By weaving together traditional knowledge, forest management practices, livelihoods, and biodiversity conservation, we can uncover innovative solutions that balance human well-being with environmental protection, ultimately fostering sustainable forest management in Cameroon.
1.2 Description of Problem Statement
Indigenous communities around the world possess a wealth of knowledge regarding sustainable forest management practices that have been developed over generations. This knowledge is critical not only for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance but also for supporting the livelihoods of these communities. However, this traditional knowledge is increasingly at risk of being lost due to various factors, including modernization, climate change, and the encroachment of industrial practices.Local communities possess valuable traditional
knowledge and practices that can contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability (Brook & McLachlan, 2008). However, these knowledge systems are often overlooked or undervalued in favor of Western scientific approaches (Head, 2010).The importance of indigenous knowledge in environmental management has been recognized globally (Camacho et al., 2016). Local communities have developed unique practices and strategies to manage natural resources sustainably (Lambi et al., 2012). For instance, the Aga Tenganan Pegringsingan Bali community in Indonesia has traditional knowledge on environmental conservation and sanitation (Surtikanti et al., 2019).
Despite the value of local knowledge, there are significant challenges to its integration into mainstream environmental management (Brook & McLachlan, 2008). One major issue is the lack of documentation and recognition of indigenous knowledge systems (Camacho et al., 2016). This has resulted in the erosion of traditional practices and the loss of cultural heritage (Head, 2010).Furthermore, the dominant Western scientific paradigm often marginalizes local knowledge, perceiving it as inferior or unscientific (Lambi et al., 2012). This has led to the imposition of external management strategies that may not be suitable for local contexts (Surtikanti et al., 2019).Futhermore the younger generations are often disconnected from traditional practices due to urban migration, education systems that prioritize Western knowledge, and the influence of technology. This disconnection leads to a decline in the transmission of valuable forest management techniques that have proven effective over centuries.The lack of integration of indigenous knowledge into contemporary forest management strategies can result in unsustainable practices that contribute to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. Indigenous practices often emphasize harmony with nature, contrasting sharply with many industrial approaches.
The consequences of neglecting local knowledge are far-reaching. Environmental degradation and biodiversity loss can have devastating impacts on local livelihoods and well-being (Brook & McLachlan, 2008). Moreover, the loss of traditional knowledge can lead to cultural homogenization and the erosion of community identity (Head, 2010).There is an urgent need to recognize the value of local knowledge and to develop strategies for its integration into environmental management (Camacho et al., 2016). This requires a paradigm shift, from a dominant Western scientific approach to a more inclusive and participatory approach that values local knowledge and perspectives (Lambi et al., 2012).One potential solution is the development of community-based management strategies that incorporate local knowledge and practices (Surtikanti et al., 2019). This approach recognizes the rights and interests of local
communities and provides a framework for collaborative management of natural resources (Brook & McLachlan, 2008).However, there are significant challenges to the implementation of community-based management strategies (Camacho et al., 2016). These include issues of power and governance, as well as the need for capacity building and institutional support (Lambi et al., 2012).
Despite these challenges, there are examples of successful community-based management initiatives that demonstrate the potential of local knowledge in environmental conservation (Surtikanti et al., 2019). These initiatives provide valuable lessons for the development of more effective and sustainable environmental management strategies (Brook & McLachlan, 2008).Thee integration of local knowledge into environmental management is critical for the development of sustainable and effective conservation strategies (Camacho et al., 2016). However, this requires a fundamental shift in the way we approach environmental management, from a dominant Western scientific paradigm to a more inclusive and participatory approach that values local knowledge and perspectives (Lambi et al., 2012).Ultimately, the recognition and integration of local knowledge into environmental management has the potential to contribute to more sustainable and equitable outcomes for both local communities and the environment (Surtikanti et al., 2019).the challenges associated with the loss of indigenous knowledge in forest management is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals. By recognizing and valuing this knowledge, we can enhance forest conservation efforts, support indigenous rights, and promote resilient ecosystems that benefit both people and the planet.

1.4Rationale
The integration of indigenous knowledge into forest management practices is justified by the need to promote sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and human well-being in the Santchou Faunal Reserve. The motivation behind this approach lies in the recognition that indigenous communities possess valuable traditional knowledge and practices that have been developed over centuries, offering innovative solutions to contemporary environmental challenges.
