ABSTRACT

This study assesses employee turnover and retention schemes in six selected star-rated hotels in Fako Division, Southwest Cameroon. Employee turnover remains a significant challenge in the hospitality industry, affecting service quality, operational efficiency, and financial performance. This research aims to analyze the factors contributing to high turnover rates and evaluate the effectiveness of retention schemes implemented by the hotels.

A mixed-method approach was used, combining qualitative interviews with hotel managers and human resource personnel, alongside quantitative surveys of hotel employees. The interviews aimed to gather insights on the turnover challenges faced by these hotels, as well as the retention strategies currently in place. The surveys captured employee satisfaction, reasons for leaving, and the perceived effectiveness of retention programs. Relevant literature on employee turnover in the hospitality industry was also reviewed to provide context.

The findings indicate that high employee turnover in star-rated hotels in Fako is driven by several factors, including low wages, limited career growth opportunities, and poor working conditions. Additionally, the seasonal nature of the hospitality industry contributes to job insecurity. Although some hotels have implemented retention schemes, such as performance bonuses, training programs, and employee recognition, these measures have not fully addressed the underlying causes of turnover. The study also found that employees who felt valued and saw clear paths for career advancement were more likely to stay.

The study concludes that addressing employee turnover in Fako’s hospitality sector requires a comprehensive approach. Recommendations include improving working conditions, offering competitive salaries, and enhancing professional development opportunities. Hotels should also implement more robust retention strategies that focus on employee engagement and job satisfaction. By addressing these issues, star-rated hotels in Fako can reduce turnover rates, improve employee retention, and ultimately enhance service quality and customer satisfaction.
