Abstract

The nursing process is a systematic approach to patient care that aims to improve clinical outcomes and enhance the quality of care. However, barriers to the effective implementation of this process can undermine its benefits. This study assesses the barriers to the implementation of the nursing process among nurses working at Buea Regional Hospital in Cameroon, identifying key challenges and proposing potential solutions.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 20 nurses at Buea Regional Hospital. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that explored various aspects of the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The questionnaire focused on identifying barriers encountered by nurses in applying the nursing process in their daily practice.

The study identified several significant barriers to the implementation of the nursing process. The most frequently reported barriers included:

1. Lack of Time: 65% of nurses cited time constraints as a major obstacle, attributing this to heavy patient loads and administrative duties that limit their ability to thoroughly follow the nursing process.

2. Insufficient Training: 50% of respondents reported inadequate training in the nursing process, leading to difficulties in applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

3. Inadequate Resources: 40% of nurses mentioned a lack of necessary resources and equipment, which hampers their ability to conduct thorough assessments and implement care plans effectively.

4. Administrative Challenges: 35% of nurses faced administrative challenges, such as insufficient support from hospital management and lack of clear guidelines, which affect their ability to adhere to the nursing process.

5. Communication Issues: 30% of respondents identified poor communication within the healthcare team as a barrier, impacting the coordination and effectiveness of care planning and implementation.

6. Resistance to Change: 25% of nurses experienced resistance to adopting the nursing process due to established routines and reluctance to change among some staff members.

The study also highlighted that the barriers are interrelated and often compound each other. For instance, insufficient training and inadequate resources can exacerbate time constraints and contribute to administrative challenges.

In conclusion, the effective implementation of the nursing process at Buea Regional Hospital is hindered by a combination of time constraints, insufficient training, inadequate resources, administrative challenges, communication issues, and resistance to change. Addressing these barriers requires a multifaceted approach, including enhancing training programs, improving resource allocation, fostering better communication and collaboration, and obtaining support from hospital administration. By overcoming these challenges, the quality of patient care can be significantly improved, leading to better clinical outcomes and enhanced nursing practice.
