ABSTRACT
This study evaluates the factors affecting leadership effectiveness at Dangote Cement Company in Douala, Cameroon. Effective leadership is vital to achieving organizational success and improving employee performance. The research focuses on leadership styles, communication methods, decision-making, and employee engagement. It also examines how these factors influence leadership effectiveness within the company. Additionally, the study explores challenges leaders face and how these challenges affect the company’s overall performance.
A mixed-method approach was used in this study. Qualitative interviews were conducted with senior managers, middle-level leaders, and employees at Dangote Cement. The interviews aimed to understand leadership practices and their perceived effectiveness. A quantitative survey was also conducted among employees. It gathered data on leadership styles, communication quality, decision-making processes, and employee involvement. Leadership theories relevant to large industrial organizations were reviewed to provide theoretical context. Special attention was given to African business environments.
The findings show that leadership effectiveness at Dangote Cement is influenced by several factors. Transformational leadership styles were found to be most effective. Leaders who inspire and engage employees tend to achieve better results. Communication was identified as a crucial factor. Clear and open communication between leaders and employees improved job satisfaction. Employee involvement in decision-making also led to better leadership outcomes. However, challenges remain. Many leaders at Dangote Cement lack formal leadership training. This gap weakens their ability to handle complex situations. Additionally, resistance to change from both leaders and employees was observed. This resistance affects the implementation of new strategies. Another issue identified was the lack of regular feedback mechanisms. Without proper feedback, leaders struggle to make timely adjustments to their approaches.
The study concludes that leadership at Dangote Cement can improve through targeted strategies. Leadership development programs should be introduced to equip leaders with necessary skills. Regular communication and feedback mechanisms should be established. Encouraging employee participation in decision-making will foster a more collaborative environment. Addressing resistance to change through change management strategies will also help. By implementing these recommendations, Dangote Cement can enhance leadership effectiveness and improve overall performance.
