Abstract

Living with a serious health condition such as pressure ulcers presents significant challenges for patients, including physical discomfort, emotional stress, and adaptation to new care routines.

This study aims to assess the knowledge and adaptive strategies of patients at the Buea Regional Hospital in managing pressure ulcers, focusing on understanding patient awareness of pressure ulcer care, coping mechanisms, and adaptation to lifestyle changes necessary for effective management.

A cross-sectional descriptive study design was employed, involving patients diagnosed with pressure ulcers and those at risk. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews to capture patient knowledge of pressure ulcer causes, prevention strategies, and wound care practices.

Additionally, the study examined patients’ psychological adjustment, access to support systems, and barriers to effective adaptation, including financial constraints, social support, and access to healthcare resources.

Preliminary findings suggest that while some patients understand basic preventive measures, there is a notable gap in knowledge regarding comprehensive care practices, such as skin inspection, repositioning techniques, and proper nutrition.

Factors influencing adaptation include the availability of caregiver support, financial resources, and educational background. Patients with strong family or community support reported better adherence to care practices and greater psychological resilience.

This study highlights the need for targeted patient education programs on pressure ulcer management, greater involvement of caregivers, and resources for adaptive support. Enhanced patient education, along with structured hospital and community support, may improve patient adaptation and outcomes in managing pressure ulcers at the Buea Regional Hospital.
