Abstract

This study assesses the knowledge of female students at RHIBMS Buea regarding the causes and prevention of dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea, characterized by painful menstrual cramps, is a common issue affecting many women, significantly impacting their daily activities and academic performance. Understanding the causes and prevention strategies is essential for improving the quality of life among female students. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the level of awareness among these students concerning dysmenorrhea, including its etiology, management, and preventive measures.

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted involving  female students from RHIBMS. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling to ensure representation across different academic years. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire that included sections on demographics, knowledge of dysmenorrhea causes, and prevention methods.

Results indicate that a majority of respondents (70%) recognized that dysmenorrhea is primarily caused by hormonal changes, while only 30% understood the role of underlying medical conditions such as endometriosis. Regarding prevention, 60% of participants acknowledged lifestyle modifications, such as regular exercise and dietary changes, as effective strategies. However, knowledge about medical interventions and pain relief options was relatively low, with only 40% aware of over-the-counter pain medications.

The findings underscore a critical need for comprehensive health education programs targeting dysmenorrhea among female students. Educational workshops and seminars should be organized to provide accurate information on the condition, its causes, and effective management strategies. Moreover, incorporating dysmenorrhea education into health curricula can empower students to manage their symptoms better and seek timely medical assistance.

In conclusion, enhancing female students’ knowledge about dysmenorrhea at RHIBMS Buea is essential for promoting their overall health and academic performance. Increased awareness can lead to better management of symptoms, ultimately reducing the negative impact of dysmenorrhea on their educational experience.
