Abstract
Cervical cancer remains a significant public health concern in Cameroon, particularly in regions like Buea, where access to healthcare and early detection services is often limited. This study explores the challenges faced by cervical cancer patients and their families in Buea, as well as the coping strategies they employ to navigate the physical, emotional, and financial burdens associated with the disease. Understanding these challenges and coping mechanisms is crucial for developing supportive interventions that can improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
A qualitative research design was adopted for this study, involving in-depth interviews with 30 cervical cancer patients and 20 family members who are primary caregivers. The participants were recruited from Buea Regional Hospital and local cancer support groups. Data collection focused on identifying the multifaceted challenges encountered during diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care, as well as the coping strategies utilized by patients and their families. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed thematically to identify common patterns and unique experiences.
The findings reveal that cervical cancer patients in Buea face numerous challenges, including late diagnosis due to limited access to screening services and lack of awareness about the disease. Financial difficulties were a significant concern, as many patients struggled to afford the costs of treatment, which often include surgery, chemotherapy, and transportation to healthcare facilities. Additionally, the emotional toll of the disease was profound, with many patients experiencing depression, anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness. The stigma associated with cancer in the community also exacerbated these emotional challenges, leading to social isolation and reduced support from extended family and friends.
Family members, particularly those who serve as primary caregivers, also faced considerable challenges. The financial burden of care, coupled with the emotional strain of watching a loved one suffer, often led to caregiver burnout. Caregivers reported difficulties in balancing their caregiving responsibilities with other aspects of their lives, such as work and caring for other family members. Despite these challenges, patients and their families employed various coping strategies to manage their situation. These strategies included relying on social support networks, engaging in religious or spiritual practices, and adopting a positive outlook on life. Some families also sought support from local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and cancer support groups, which provided emotional support, financial assistance, and information about managing the disease.
The study concludes that cervical cancer patients and their families in Buea face significant challenges that impact their quality of life. However, they also demonstrate resilience through various coping strategies. To improve the well-being of these patients and their families, there is a need for comprehensive support systems that address both the medical and psychosocial aspects of cancer care. This could include expanding access to cervical cancer screening and treatment services, providing financial support for low-income patients, and strengthening community-based support networks.
