Abstract
The integration of hearing impaired students into regular primary and secondary schools presents unique challenges for both teaching and learning processes. This study aims to assess these challenges within the context of Limbe, Southwest Cameroon, focusing on how they affect the educational experiences and outcomes of hearing impaired students. The objective is to identify the barriers encountered in educational settings and to suggest strategies for improving the learning environment for these students.
The research uses a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data is collected from teachers, hearing impaired students, and school administrators in regular primary and secondary schools in Limbe. The study explores various aspects of the educational experience, including instructional methods, classroom environment, resource availability, and support services. It also examines the specific challenges faced by hearing impaired students, such as communication barriers, inadequate teaching materials, and lack of specialized support.
Findings reveal several significant challenges in the teaching and learning processes for hearing impaired students. Communication barriers between teachers and students, coupled with a lack of training in specialized teaching methods, hinder effective instruction. Insufficient availability of assistive technologies and teaching materials designed for hearing impaired students further exacerbates these difficulties. Additionally, the study identifies a need for more inclusive practices and support services to address the diverse needs of hearing impaired students.
Recommendations emphasize the importance of providing targeted professional development for teachers to equip them with skills and strategies for effectively teaching hearing impaired students. Schools should invest in assistive technologies and adapted teaching materials to enhance accessibility and learning outcomes. Additionally, fostering a more inclusive school environment through awareness programs and support services can help improve the educational experiences of hearing impaired students.
In conclusion, addressing the challenges faced by hearing impaired students in regular schools in Limbe requires a comprehensive approach involving teacher training, resource enhancement, and inclusive practices. By implementing these recommendations, educational institutions can create a more supportive and effective learning environment that accommodates the needs of hearing impaired students and promotes their academic success.
