Efficient and accessible transportation is a crucial component of sustainable development, particularly in rural areas. In developed countries, advances in transportation infrastructure, public transit systems, and integration of various modes have greatly improved mobility and connectivity for rural populations. Investments in roads, railways, and multimodal hubs have enabled seamless movement of people and goods, connecting even the most remote communities to economic and social opportunities (Bocarejo & Oviedo, 2012; Geurs & van Wee, 2004).
However, the reality in many developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, presents a different picture. Rural transportation challenges remain a significant barrier to inclusive growth and development. Inadequate road networks, lack of public transportation options, and limited access to private vehicle ownership hinder the ability of rural residents to access essential services, educational facilities, and economic activities (Starkey & Hine, 2014; Bryceson et al., 2003).
Cameroon, a Central African nation, is no exception to these rural transportation challenges. Despite its relatively stable economic and political environment compared to some of its neighboring countries, Cameroon grapples with the uneven distribution of transportation infrastructure and services across its diverse geographical landscape. The country’s rugged terrain, with mountainous regions, dense forests, and scattered settlements, poses unique logistical obstacles to providing reliable and affordable transportation options in rural areas (Fonjong & Fokum, 2017).
These informal transportation modes have become a lifeline for the residents of Bambui, enabling them to access markets, healthcare facilities, and educational opportunities. However, the unregulated nature of these services raises concerns about safety, reliability, and equity, as they may not adequately cater to the needs of the most vulnerable members of the community (Porter, 2014; Cervero, 2000).
Against this backdrop, a comprehensive assessment of the contribution of taxi and okada services to the rural transportation landscape in Bambui is necessary. Such an assessment can provide significant contributions into the role of these informal modes in supporting the mobility needs of the local population, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with their integration into a broader transportation system. The findings of this study can then inform policy decisions, infrastructure investments, and the development of sustainable transportation solutions that better serve the needs of rural communities in Cameroon and other developing countries.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
This study focuses on the inadequacy of reliable and safe transportation services in the Bambui area, which significantly hampers the mobility and economic development of rural communities. In many developing countries, including the Bambui area, transportation options are severely limited, leading to challenges in accessing essential services, educational institutions, and economic opportunities.
While taxi and okada services provide essential connectivity for the local population, enabling access to markets and employment opportunities, raises significant concerns regarding safety, reliability, and fair pricing. These issues disproportionately affect vulnerable community members who may lack alternative means of transportation.
Given the critical role of transportation in fostering rural development and addressing the unique challenges faced by the Bambui area, it is imperative to conduct a thorough assessment of the effectiveness and sustainability of taxi and okada services. Such an evaluation will yield contributions into their strengths and weaknesses and inform policy decisions aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and services to better meet the needs of the local population.
